Conversations with Lucia Peterson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Peterson.

Lucia Peterson

Hi Lucia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I studied graphic design at the University of Minnesota and got my career started at Periscope, after about three years of learning the tricks of the trade, I moved to Australia where I began my freelance journey working with small and large agencies around Sydney and Melbourne.

Since my return in 2021, I’ve founded my design shop called Showpony Studio™. We specialize in branding and packaging and have clients all over the country!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Only within the last couple of years can I say my course has steadied. While abroad, I briefly tried my hand at fashion styling. I had minor successes, but those only made me realize my true calling as a brand designer.

My ethics have also been tested along the way – when you work for large agencies you might get stuck with a brand or project that you don’t believe in. I’ve run into this many times and am so glad I’m finally in a place where I have the power to call the shots.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I founded Showpony Studio™ to help bring ideas to life. Working with mostly small businesses and entrepreneurs, I have a deep reverence for timeless design.

Yes, trends are fun, but I want to give my clients a chance to stand the test of time. In addition, I love building relationships with the people I work with – I know owning a business is tough, so it’s important to me to be a pillar of support in my client’s journey.

One of my favorite projects was refreshing the branding of the Aster Cafe on Main Street in Minneapolis. I’ve been attending this restaurant for a decade, so this one was an absolute honor to lead.

What do you think about happiness?
Attending flea markets. Collecting vintage jewelry. Having a random interaction with a barista. Making last-minute travel plans. Ordering a different cocktail.

If I think hard, a common thread between these random activities is that I feel curious about what may come along the way. Maybe it’s just a funny interaction with a stranger, or perhaps a life-altering experience that reframes my entire point of view.

The point is, I need to turn all the stones over to see what may lie on the other side!
