Conversations with Madeline O’Donoghue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline O’Donoghue.

Hi Madeline, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career path began as something of a whirlwind. In college, I struggled to find the right direction and spent several years transferring schools and taking gap years while trying to figure out what truly fit. During that time, I traveled extensively through South Africa and Southeast Asia, backpacking and exploring the world before eventually returning home to Minnesota. Years later, I found myself married, raising my first child, and still searching for a deeper sense of purpose in my work. Looking back, that search was really the beginning of everything.

In my late twenties, I connected with a group of inspiring women in my hometown of Stillwater, and through those relationships I was given the opportunity to learn marketing from the ground up. What started as small projects like social media retainers, web design, and marketing support, gradually grew through word of mouth. Ironically, this was never a field I initially imagined myself pursuing. But during the years I owned and operated a yoga studio, I had already taught myself how to market a business out of necessity, and those skills naturally evolved into something much larger.

As I continued learning and growing, I realized how deeply I loved the creative and strategic side of building brands. Two years ago, I officially launched Studio Cherry Marketing. Today, Studio Cherry is a full-service brand studio focused on building brands that are both elevated and impactful. We go beyond consulting…we create. From premium branding and web design to social media strategy, messaging, and brand photography, we execute every detail with intention and at the highest level. From start to finish, our goal is to make every brand we work with truly undeniable.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and honestly, I think that’s what shaped both me and the business into what they are today. For a long time, I struggled with uncertainty, not knowing what career path was right for me, feeling behind compared to others, and trying to balance ambition with major life transitions like marriage and becoming a mother. There were years where I questioned whether I was on the right path at all.

When I first started doing marketing work, I didn’t fully see myself in the industry. I was learning everything as I went, often saying yes to opportunities before I felt completely ready. Building confidence in my skills while also building a business from scratch was one of the biggest challenges. I was learning how to navigate entrepreneurship while also showing up for the people I love, my family, friends, clients, and community. Balancing the demands of business ownership with the roles that matter most to me required patience, flexibility, and a lot of trust in the process.

Another challenge was learning to trust my instincts. In the beginning, I underestimated the value of what I brought to the table because so much of my experience came from unconventional paths and self-teaching rather than a traditional corporate background. But over time, I realized that those experiences, traveling, building a yoga studio, navigating reinvention, and learning through real-world work, were exactly what gave me a unique perspective.

Looking back, none of it was linear, but every challenge pushed me closer to building something that feels deeply aligned with who I am and the kind of work I want to create as well as the clientele I want to work with.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Today, I’m the founder and creative director of Studio Cherry Marketing, a full-service brand studio specializing in elevated branding, web design, social media strategy, messaging, and brand photography. At the core of what we do is helping businesses build brands that feel intentional, recognizable, and deeply aligned with who they are. We don’t just create visuals, we help shape the full brand experience from start to finish.

Over the years, I’ve become especially known for building brands that feel both refined and emotionally connected. I love taking a business that has a strong vision but lacks clarity or cohesion and transforming it into something people instantly recognize and trust. Whether it’s developing a visual identity, crafting messaging, directing photography, or designing a website, I approach every project with both strategy, clarity, and creativity in mind.

What I’m most proud of is the fact that I built this business organically and in a way that feels authentic to me. Almost everything has grown through relationships, referrals, and trust, which means so much because it reflects the quality of the work and the experience we create for clients. I’m also proud that I’ve built a business that allows me to blend creativity, storytelling, and entrepreneurship while still staying connected to people in a meaningful way.

I think what sets Studio Cherry apart is that we are deeply hands-on and intentional in everything we create. We don’t believe in generic branding or surface-level marketing. Every brand we work with is approached thoughtfully and collaboratively, with a focus on creating work that not only looks beautiful but also communicates something real. Our goal is always to create brands that are memorable, elevated, and impossible to ignore.

How do you think about luck?
I think luck has played a role in my life and business, but more than anything, I believe it’s been about being open to opportunities and willing to grow through uncertainty. Some of the most important moments in my career came from unexpected relationships, chance conversations, or people taking a chance on me before I fully believed in myself. Meeting the women in my hometown who introduced me to marketing work completely changed the trajectory of my career, and in many ways, that felt like a form of good luck.

At the same time, I’ve also experienced what felt like setbacks or “bad luck” in the moment, feeling lost in college, changing directions multiple times, questioning my path, and starting over more than once. But looking back, those experiences gave me resilience, perspective, and the ability to adapt, which are qualities that have become essential in entrepreneurship.

I’ve learned that luck alone doesn’t build a business, but being willing to say yes, work hard, stay curious, and continue showing up can turn unexpected opportunities into something meaningful. A lot of my journey has been unconventional, and I think some of the best things in my life and business came from paths I never originally planned for.
