Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Romportl.
Hi Mallory, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began wood-burning decorations for my wedding 6 six years ago. I picked up my mom’s 20-year-old wood burner and despite the process taking forever, I fell in love with it! After my husband and I got married, I worked as a para at a school district but my heart wasn’t in it. I told my husband how I felt and that I truly wanted to explore art (mainly wood burning) and his response was ‘go for it!’
Fast forward to today, I have been featured by Etsy, Better Homes & Gardens, Prime Video and people around the world have my art in their homes! It blesses my heart!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have never been the ‘overnight success’. I have had many projects fall through, some I have made minor mistakes on and others I’ve had to start completely over. I’ve also run into slow months and had to close my shop sometimes due to financial troubles and medical issues.
I’ve had 2 babies since I started this business and shifted into motherhood full force so many days running a business and motherhood feels extremely overwhelming.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I created faith-based wood-burning art! There are many incredible wood burners out there but I am one of the few Christian wood burners. Much of my art is custom orders but if I’m working on pieces for a collection, most of the time, they will be collaborations with other faith-based artists or Bible verse pieces I’ve created myself.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Spending more time at home with your family and being able to teach my kids wasn’t a burden. We spent more time as a family and just learned to rest. I got to watch my kids thrive by exploring and learning new things. The biggest lesson in that time though was learning how to help others best, whether it was just talking on the phone with them, bringing them a meal, delivering groceries, or just telling them that they are loved. It was such a hard time for so many people.
