Conversations with Maxwell Behnke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Behnke.

Hi Maxwell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for creating images. I’ve had a camera in my hands since kindergarten and, for some reason, I’ve never been able to put it down. I pursued a degree in film, where I found my love for Cinematography. There is something immensely satisfying to me about pulling an image out of a director’s head and putting it on screen.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not! This industry is so insanely difficult to force yourself into, then, once you’re in, it’s an uncertain grind forever. But I love it! Not to mention actually doing the job!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At this point in my career, I have shot a multitude (I honestly lost count) of short films. I am proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish on set of some of those shorts. Given low budgets and limited time, I’m happy with the results. What sets me apart is my ability to take whatever circumstances are presented to me and make the most of them!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I listen to a lot of podcasts, but one of my favorites for anyone looking to work in film is the Team Deakins podcast. It is hosted by James and Rodger Deakins. Rodger is a cinematographer (famous for his work with the Coen brothers, Denis Villeneuve, etc,) and a two-time Oscar winner, while James has been his longtime collaborator and wife. They interview industry professionals and go DEEP. Very insightful and inspiring.
