Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Hamlin.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
From my earliest years, I was drawn to photography like a magnet. Whether borrowing my mom’s phone, wielding a digital camera from our family collection, or simply mimicking the act with my hands, I was compelled to capture moments. Throughout middle and high school, my friends and I indulged in impromptu phone photoshoots, where I naturally gravitated toward the role of the photographer. The pivotal moment came when I invested in my own Canon DSLR, initially prompted by plans for a European adventure during senior year (alas, ruined by the unforeseen circumstances of COVID-19). Determined to make the most of my newfound equipment, I undertook my senior photos to save some money, and it felt right. As I honed my craft, venturing into different photography styles with friends, it became evident that this passion could be more than a hobby. With a few classmates requesting their senior portraits, I leaped into entrepreneurship. What started as a modest venture capturing senior memories soon blossomed into a business as word spread and diverse photography opportunities presented themselves. Upon entering college, my portfolio expanded exponentially, and I became the designated photographer for Student Involvement on campus. I also dipped my toes into the world of videography for the first time, broadening my creative horizons.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most challenging aspect of this journey lies in mastering the business facets. Crafting captivating photos pales compared to the intricacies of navigating marketing strategies, cultivating client relationships, understanding taxes, and delving into the other demands of entrepreneurship. The creative process may flow naturally, but the path to sustainable success is full of hurdles, mainly when doing it independently.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a photographer, I specialize in portraits and events. I love capturing special moments in people’s lives in a beautiful way. Unlike others in my field, I don’t limit myself to a single niche. I thrive on the diversity of projects, whether capturing the magic of weddings, the charm of senior portraits, the warmth of family photos, the professionalism of business headshots, or any other creative endeavor you can imagine. My dedication to understanding my clients personally sets me apart, ensuring a tailored experience that reflects their unique essence. I strive to infuse each session with elements that resonate with my clients’ personalities through poses, locations, or props, thereby elevating the entire photographic experience.
