Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Matthews.
Hi Michelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a kid I always was creative. I used to draw and watch makeup videos in High school. I grew up in Minneapolis MN North side. Many people around me wouldn’t even have guessed I was into makeup because I only wore makeup twice to school. Once I graduated I later down the line started letting my friend do my makeup. I fell in love with makeup again. I just didn’t know what to get but my friend gave me a list and after that everything was history. I did makeup every single day after work and before work. I used to stay up long nights practicing Makeup. I quickly realized the only thing that made me happy was makeup. I finally decided to quit my job and follow my dreams. Many people judged me and doubted me for quitting my job to follow my dreams but now today I don’t regret it because I am living my dreams while making money on my own schedule. I am now a makeup artist, special effects artist and wig influencer. I have a great support following on TikTok and I go viral multiple times a month even on YouTube and Facebook. As I can genuinely say it was all worth it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles through this journey was not easy. I dealt with a lot of small minded people that felt if you didn’t have a corporate job or was going to school then you are making excuses not to work. Little did they know I would stay up for hours until sun up finishing makeup looks. My makeup looks would take me from 2 hours to 10 hours and I would say that sounds like hard work to me. People didn’t believe in me but believed in me enough to want me to do their services. I was very patient with my art because I wanted to be different. A lot of people didn’t agree with the special effects because that wasn’t a thing a lot of people knew how to do. They thought it was “weird” but I always ignored it. I will say a lot of people didn’t see the vision until I made it to my reality.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a special effects artist, wig influencer and Makeup Artist. I first got popular from my special effects looks in my home town. Once I became a wig influencer I became big on other socials. The thing that sets me apart from the others is how creative I am. Even when I do hair I am creative I do the most craziest colors and creative patterns with hair and makeup.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
As a kid my favorite memory would be being with my big cousin Ari. She used to teach me how to dance by doing dance routines. Take me to get my nails done. Take me to her dance classes and just treated me more like a younger sister than a little cousin. That’s why I am energetic and out going because she made my childhood a safe space and fun.
