Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Mercado Michelli.
Hi Pamela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Puerto Rico to Minnesota in 2015 after completing my BA in Criminal Justice and commissioning in the US Army. Upon arriving in Minnesota, I began working in the victim services field and decided to pursue my Masters in Advocacy and Political Leadership at Metropolitan State in Saint Paul. Recently I was motivated to write a children’s book in Spanish that celebrates the Puerto Rican culture through beautiful illustrations and rhymes. The two main characters are my 5-year-old daughter and our loving dog, Mateo. Soon their adventures will continue to the beautiful country of Argentina.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the publishing world can be extremely overwhelming. It has been a learning experience. I learned a lot from my first book that I will be implementing and improving for my second book.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Social work and Community Programs Administration. I have been working in victim services for over six years. I have also recently published a Spanish children’s book, Daniela y Mateo Viajan, a Puerto Rico, that celebrates the uniqueness of Puerto Rican culture. I have had the opportunity to share this story with Maple Groves Park & Recreation with their story walks initiative, Saint Paul Public libraries, and several bookstores in Puerto Rico.
Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share? We’re always looking for lessons we can learn in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis.
I have learned to value more opportunities to connect with others. It also allowed me to use my creativity to connect with people virtually.
