Conversations with Patty Roloff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Roloff.

Hi Patty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been doing hair since 1987. I started working at a salon on the east side of St Paul Minnesota. I worked there for 10 years and then decided to go as an independent contractor. A salon opened in downtown White Bear Lake and I went and met with the owner and decided to take the leap. it was about 25 minutes away from where the Salon I was working at was so it was going to be a big change for my clients. I stayed there for 10 years and built a clientele in white bear. A lot of my clients did follow me and I am still with them. after my 10 years there, me and three other stylist decided to go out on her own and open a salon. A space in Downtown Way, Bear Lake opened up so we went and inquired about it and decided it was going to be a great fit. It took about three months to do the build out of the salon. We all put in a lot of hard work. But we did have a lot of help also from family and friends. we open the salon October 1 of 2008, with 10 stylist chairs, and one nail tech station. It was a little slow, but we ended up hiring a full salon. After 14+ years, we decided to close the salon. I had never thought I would want to have a Salon on my own, but after talking with friends and family and a lot of thinking, I decided to open up another salon in the same space. I was very lucky All stylist and nail tech wanted to move on with me into our next journey. In about 10 days time, we did a lot of painting., Cleaning, shopping, and remodeling the space. I had a lot of help from the stylists , family and friends. we reopened the salon as Hair Hive! I had help with the name from all the girls. The salon itself is still a work in process, we keep changing furniture, decorations, and anything else we feel needs help. We have two large windows in front of the salon that everyone comments on how beautiful they are decorated. We change it for each season. It is a group effort, but they are always beautiful! I wouldn’t change my decision that I made four years ago. We have had a couple new stylists since then. But we are a great big family!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not many struggles. One of the biggest ones is, we went from having a receptionist, to not have a receptionist. So everyone has to book their own appointments. We do have a phone that we take messages off of and will either book the appointments for the client or send messages to the stylist. That was the biggest adjustment for a lot of the girls. It has not stopped the Salon and getting new clients! Word-of-mouth is awesome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a stylist for 38+ years. I am a very social person and have become very close with most of my clients. I consider them great friends and family. I love all parts of being a stylist.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Hair Hive is the best thing I did! I love to work with people. The family at hair hive are the best!
