Today we’d like to introduce you to soua Vang.
Hi Soua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I remember my love for making films at a young age when my dad bought our first home video camera. I always took it out and recorded whatever I wanted. My love for making videos went all the way through high school and then eventually stopped once I got into college.
I Had the mentality in college that I needed to focus on school and that was the only thing. But going through school, I always felt my creativity being hindered and wanting to create something. So about 3 years into college, I decided to just go all in on it. I made myself get opportunities in the university that allowed to to explore filmmaking and hone my craft. I really do owe it to my supervisors who really let me do what I wanted in terms of creating content for the school. going through that process really let me figure out what I liked and eventually what I wanted to do out of school.
Once I graduated, I decided to not join the cooperate world and just dive deep into my passion and turn it into a business. I been going on strong since and I have not looked back!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first year in business was a real struggle. I knew nothing of the video business world but knew the only way to learn was to just head right into it. I started by going door to door in local businesses asking them if I could shoot a video for them for free. My confidence level was so small back then, that I remember just sitting inside local businesses mustering up the courage to talk and ask them for a video. I got turned away a lot and I had a lot of failures but I knew that this was all apart of the process. Making video for little pay to free was rough. I never wanted to feel like I was devaluing myself, but I knew at that time that these were the things that I needed to go through to learn the about the industry and how the business works. So I never look at my failures as being a failure, but as a stepping stone to knowledge and confidence that will soon become second nature. slowly, I started to get get more recognized and started to charge people for my work and it just kept going from there. I never had any sort of guidance within the industry so learning everything myself through experience was the best teacher.
Going through all of this by myself, I knew first hand how it was like not having anyone help you. So nowadays, I love to help other creatives as much as I can. I want to be that person that I wish I had when I first started. someone who they can turn to for questions and some guidance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would say my work is unique in the fact that I love to work with travel and urban style brands. Growing up, I always loved watching travel video and also product ads that would entice people to do something, or buy a product. So once I decided to pursue my video career, I wanted to get into the travel industry, as well as the product brand industry.
I think what I am most proud of is seeing how far I’ve come from when I first started. When I started, I was doing local business video and food style videos. I didn’t mind doing these, but my true passion was within the travel and product brand industry. Fast forward to 1 year later, I have been able to work with multiple travel and product brands within such a short amount of time. Realistically, I thought it would have taken years, but my determination to work with the brands that I wanted I guess worked out for me.
When I work with these brands, I really take the time to think about how I can make them standout but at the same time make them feel like they are in their element. I think that’s one thing that I take pride in. Taking the time to really look at a brand and see how I can tell their story in a unique way.
