Conversations with Stacia Goodman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacia Goodman

Hi Stacia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started dabbling in craft mosaics about 20 years ago, after taking a class with a hand-made tile-maker who was trying to repurpose scraps. I had three young kids at the time, and my husband and I were both freelancers. Money was very tight. I’d grab tile out of dumpsters and slowly learned mosaic-making at night. I created a tiny maker space in our old basement cellar. Little by little, I began doing craft/art shows. The opportunity to create my first large-scale piece of public art came when my kids’ elementary school was celebrating its 100th anniversary. I had the audacity to propose a two-story mosaic for the entrance atrium. From there, my slowly portfolio grew.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any entrepreneur, and especially an art entrepreneur, has a smooth road. I’ve struggled mightily, but the scope of those struggles has changed. Early on, I worried about just covering my materials cost and finding time to make art. As my success grew, the ante has been upped! I now must understand lengthy commissioning contracts, tax regulations, and potential shipping tariffs on my materials. My husband — a former professional graphic designer and illustrator — has been a huge blessing. He joined my business full-time a few years ago to help with design, engineering, installation and overall “in-the-trenches” support. We’re a great team!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Follow my inspirational journey on Instagram @StaciaGoodmanMosaics and/or subscribe to my quarterly newsletter, full of photos and project updates, on my website StaciaGoodmanMosaics.com. About my work: I’m a professional mosaic and mixed-media artist specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of contemporary mosaic art. I compete for large-scale, site-specific public art projects across the U.S. I also work with art consultants, galleries, and occasionally accept private commissions, if I have time. Typically, I’m booked out about one year. My work is known for its timeless design, engaging narratives and impeccable fabrication. What sets me (the person) apart is my ability to listen, truly collaborate, and always bring my best right-brain and left-brain skills. I’m dedicated to my art practice and making art accessible to everyone.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned how an international epidemic can affect the economy and completely reroute how people use indoor and outdoor public spaces. The public art field has become infinitely more competitive, due to fewer indoor public spaces that want original artwork. The trend is prints, enormous painted murals to temporarily cover massive spaces (is bigger better?), or large outdoor sculptures.
