Conversations with Suzanne Casler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Casler.

Hi Suzanne , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a corporate commercial interior designer for 10 years and had been building out window installations on the side with a dream of doing Studios Moss full time, when covid hit and I got laid off. Myself and my partner at the time started Studios Moss with idea of fabricating and installing one of a kind backdrop for events, brand activations etc.
My partner left back in 2022, and I have some amazing employees working with me. There are some really amazing companies in the Twin Cities that are similar to Studios Moss, but we have more of an artistic approach and do more one of kind installations. These days we work on anything from weddings to the Walkers annual Avant Garden Party.
Moss House was an opportunity to let our imaginations run free and create installations with no boundaries other than the space itself and of course budget. Something that had a little more longevity than just a one day event. It really an opportunity to share my love of 3D installation art with the community and gives them something magical to experience and snap some selfies.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From running Studios Moss for 5 years I have learned that even if you have a specific path in mind, it tends to slightly veer off into its own thing. We worked tirelessly on getting Moss House open and now I am a full time marketing person. I am an artist, not a marketing person. So its a learning curve. We gets lots of visitors, but what I didn’t except was people renting the space for private events. Which makes perfect sense. Cell phones where not part of my youth, and selfies are not my thing, but I am trying to embrace the culture.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Studios moss is my bread and butter. I think people come to us for larger than life installations and for the unexpected,
I love that challenge. I love dreaming big and making it happen. If you tell me it is not achievable, I will prove you wrong. We are problem solvers first and foremost with lots of creativity, craftmanship and a sprinkle of engineering.
I am married to a master Wood Craftsman, and was kind of of intimidated at first, but now i would consider myself a decent carpenter. One day I would like to learn how to weld.
I also do wearable art on the side. That is my personal outlet. I have always loved taking unexpected materials and turning them into something wearable. I am that person that is always working on something.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I am a perfectionist, and I have leaned over the years that nobody is more critical of my work than I am. Let it go!
