Conversations with Theo Boss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Boss.

Hi Theo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I always loved music and wanted to be known for it but my love for creating music began when I was 9 years old. My older cousin, Nick, showed me how to produce beats on FL Studio Mobile on my mom’s iPad. I started producing house EDM and trap music, and some of those beats are still on the internet but I’m not going to tell you where because they’re terrible. I had no interest in rapping – or even rap as a whole when I started. The first rap song I heard was “Blessings” by Big Sean feat. Drake.

At least that’s the first song I remember being in love with. Rap was forbidden in my household but after hearing that song I started listening to a lot of Big Sean. At this time I was 13 and produced beats mostly on GarageBand but was also learning how to use Ableton. It might be because my dad is a poet but I’ve always really loved lyrical rap with wordplay. It was Logic who inspired me to start rapping and made me feel like I could do it too. My music has changed a lot over the years and I really don’t want to stick to one style. I recently released an EP, “Time Capsule” which has all of my very first songs on it.

It’s crazy, the support I got when I first released my music. Songs like “Can’t Help It”, and “I Don’t Want It” Got my Soundcloud over 127,000 plays in the year 2018. I wouldn’t be anything if it wasn’t for that support in the beginning. I started working with local rapper Crs Raw a lot in 2018 as well and did my first show in January 2019 as his special guest. Haven’t done many shows since then but keep your eye out for Theo Boss because I’ll be around

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for me at all. Those 127,000 plays I got in 2018 are actually the most plays I’ve gotten in a year so far. I still do appreciate the support I get and I love my fans but back in 2018, it was crazy. Not to say I won’t surpass that in the future, I will. My “fall-off”-if you want to put it that way – was mostly because of a lapse in my mental health. I started disconnecting from reality and not understanding what was real. This, along with my continued drug use lead to me getting diagnosed with psychosis when I was 17. I couldn’t articulate what I was going through and I tried to tell my fans what it was but didn’t do a good job of it.

A large portion of my fans stopped supporting me and seemingly gave up on me, which I don’t blame them for, because I seemed like a crazy person. I got prescribed meds, which I didn’t take, causing the psychosis and delusions to get worse. I will also add that I was very sad and frustrated that I lost the support of some of my biggest fans and my music wasn’t doing as well, so I handled it pretty pathetically, telling lies to make myself look better, being less than good to people, etc. I count myself lucky to still have any fans at all after that period of my life. I’m rebuilding now and still trying to get in touch with myself to make MY music and not anyone else’s. If I were to give any advice, I’d say: Delete social media if you can’t handle it. It’s okay to disappear. That’s much better than making a fool of yourself in front of literally anybody

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of being able to make an impact on people’s lives through my music. I had one fan that told me I inspired him to start making music, and his stuff is actually really good! (His name everywhere is Coltonjae. Check him out!) I also had one fan send me paragraph-long emails telling me about how my music helps him through his day at school and at home. That’s what actually made me decide that this is my path.

I’d say I’m not really known for anything yet, I’m still finding my style myself. Some people know me for my early work which was inspired by Logic and Big Sean, while others know me for the style I fell in love with more recently which is like Juice WRLD/Uzi-type beats. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t stick to one style. Some people love this, others hate it. I love doing features, like a song that’s different from what I usually make. I’ve recently been involved as a feature in a hyper pop song as well as a pop-punk song. I want to explore these genres more, too.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Determination. As I’ve said, it has not been a smooth road for me and those weren’t actually ALL of the setbacks I faced. There have been times when, because of my mental state, I wasn’t able to make good music. I could have given up but I didn’t and now I like to think I’m making better music again. It’s all a process, and there will be highs and lows within that process.

It might not be another 5 years till I blow up, I’m okay with that. I just gotta keep with it. There have been times when I want to give up but I HAVE to keep with it because my music has touched the people I mentioned before and that means a lot to me. I have to be grateful and view it as a gift. Plus, your music doesn’t even have to be good (although, you should try your best) if you’re mad consistent, and determined, you’re bound to get at least one fan from just that.
