Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler King
Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started making stupid little videos with friends in middle school and that slowly turned into a passion for media up through high school. As high school ended, I applied to about 5 different art schools but I couldn’t get in. Each one rejected my application on the grounds that my work until that point was too basic, uncreative, and lacked passion and that was very hard to hear, especially just starting out. I went into landscaping for a year after graduation while learning film, photo, graphic design, and more in my spare time trying to get my foot in the door of the media industry. After about a year and a half of practice out of school, I met a group working in media who needed some basic help and decided to give me a chance. I took that opportunity to go above and beyond to try and prove myself and that I had what it takes to not only work in this field but excel in it. After that project, I was able to start pursuing freelance work since I finally had one professional gig under my belt. I still wasn’t the best but that gave me the confidence to continue the work. This is all taking place in Ohio and after that first gig, I slowly built it into a career over the next 4 years. During that time I worked an event where a pastor from a MN church came to OH for a speaking event. I got in contact with him and started traveling to MN to work with him. That started to take off and now I split my time living in both MN and OH. I went from the middle of nowhere Ohio to now traveling the world creating content for my company, clients and so much more. This has all been over the past 8 years and it has taken more work than I ever thought to get here but it has been with every struggle!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but smooth. Some struggles include being denied art school, my younger age at the time, my middle-of-nowhere location, the competition, learning constantly, and navigating the business and media world. It’s been a real struggle but at the same time, the struggle is part of what makes the job rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in film and commercial production. I’m most proud of being an award-winning video creative for the work I’ve done on an Ohio tourism and travel project, the YouTube series “Beacon” on youtube that highlights the testimonies of people who have overcome incredible obstacles, and the feature film that releases this April called” Return of the Prodigals”!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Nothing specific but it really put an emphasis on how important video and media are in today’s world!
