Daily Inspiration: Meet Abbey Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbey Johnson

Hi Abbey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a mother of six, balancing my personal dreams with the responsibilities of motherhood has been a challenge. Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of working within the healthcare sector. My most recent position was at an addiction treatment center, where I contributed to the admissions process and supported individuals in early recovery. Holding a certificate in peer recovery support, I had the opportunity to provide services to those navigating the early stages of their recovery journey.

During my time there, I observed the profound impact that cannabis had on those recovering from substance abuse. Many clients entered treatment on multiple medications, only to leave with just one: cannabis. I continued to stay connected with these individuals, and three years later, they are still thriving in their recovery. This inspired me to explore the benefits of cannabis, CBD, and other cannabinoids more deeply.

As someone in long-term recovery, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating toll addiction can take, often leading to the loss of life. This has fueled my passion for educating others on the potential of cannabis as medicine. From opioid addiction to depression, PTSD, MS, and sleep disorders, cannabinoids have shown promising therapeutic effects. The science behind these benefits is incredibly fascinating, with ongoing research aimed at better understanding optimal dosing and therapeutic applications.

In June 2024, I applied as a social equity applicant for a cannabis retail store, and in January 2025, I proudly acquired MN THC Co. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity not only to embark on my journey as an entrepreneur but also to help individuals enhance their lives naturally through the power of cannabis.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This process has been incredibly challenging. I spent over a year searching for a space to lease for my cannabis retail store. Due to the stigma surrounding cannabis, many landlords refused to show me available properties. The few who were willing to entertain the idea often inflated the prices and didn’t offer the same benefits they would to other tenants.

Searching for a space while working full-time in addiction recovery was an immense challenge in itself.

The application process for the cannabis retail license was equally difficult. The highest level of education I completed was the eighth grade, and although I earned my GED at 16, my computer skills were limited. When I inquired about hiring someone to help write the application, I was quoted $10,000—something I simply couldn’t afford.

The application itself was time-consuming and complex. I had to read through the 400-page HF100 document multiple times, as well as the proposed cannabis rules for Minnesota, to fully understand the requirements. It took nearly 50 hours to complete the application, and I had to be meticulous in ensuring I didn’t mention anything that could be perceived as illegal. This required me to carefully study the laws in advance.

Additionally, I had to pay a nonrefundable $2,500 fee just to submit the application.

After submitting, I waited months for a response. In November, the Office of Cannabis Management sent out denial letters to 1,600 of the 1,800 applicants and scheduled the lottery for the following week. Most denials were for out-of-state applicants or those who didn’t complete their application properly. I didn’t receive a denial, so I waited in suspense. Then, a day later, I received an acceptance letter, which significantly increased my chances in the lottery. Unfortunately, the applicants who were denied filed a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota, and the lottery was canceled.

Throughout this entire process, there have been constant changes and much to keep up with.

I’ve now been automatically added to the next lottery, scheduled for late spring. Fingers crossed that I am accepted and can continue this journey!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the years, I have had the privilege of specializing in a variety of fields, all centered around education and providing exceptional care to individuals. I hold multiple licenses and certifications, including those in cosmetology, cosmetology education, and peer recovery support. Each of these experiences has shaped my approach to customer service and problem-solving, which I consider to be my core strengths.

At MN THC Co., I’ve combined my passion for education with my dedication to excellent customer service. I recognize that many of our guests come to us seeking solutions to specific challenges, and it is my mission to help them navigate their journey successfully. Educating our customers about the benefits and uses of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids is a central focus of our work, and I take great pride in delivering this information in a clear, approachable, and professional manner.

What sets me apart is my ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and my commitment to providing them with the knowledge and support they need. Whether through one-on-one consultations or group education, I ensure that every guest leaves with the information and confidence they need to make informed decisions. This blend of education, personalized care, and a commitment to service is what I’m most proud of at MN THC Co.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me truly happy is being a trailblazer and working for myself. There is something incredibly fulfilling about building something from the ground up and being my own boss. I take immense pride in knowing that my children get to see me pursue my dreams and create a business that reflects my values. I hope that by leading by example, I can inspire them to recognize their own strengths and, in turn, encourage them to forge their own paths toward success and independence.

As a woman in the cannabis industry, I am particularly proud to be part of a sector that has historically lacked women-owned businesses. The opportunity to break down barriers and provide a platform for other women and minority-owned brands is something that drives me every day. I am actively seeking out and supporting these brands, elevating their voices and creating an inclusive space for their growth and recognition. This is more than just business to me; it’s about empowering others and helping to create a more diverse and equitable industry.

Beyond that, I am passionate about changing the narrative around cannabis. For far too long, cannabis has been stigmatized, and its medical benefits have been overlooked or dismissed. I am determined to use my platform to shift that conversation—to educate others on the powerful healing properties of cannabis, including THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. I want to help people understand how these products can improve their lives, whether it’s for pain management, mental health, or overall wellness. Ultimately, what makes me happy is knowing that I am contributing to a positive change in both the cannabis industry and the broader community, helping to redefine what success and wellness truly mean.
