Daily Inspiration: Meet Amanda Rome

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Rome.

Hi Amanda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Cambridge with my husband in 2018 with the dream of building a more sustainable lifestyle together. Dreams of creating a self-sustaining homestead where we grew our own food started to seem not so far off. As our farm started to develop and grow the reality of what The Romestead could be started to become more clear.

Flowers were not even a thought when we first started on this journey. As Amanda was doing research on starting vegetable seeds she stumbled upon a farm that grew flowers as a crop. We still had a large mowed area in our yard that we were wanting to give a purpose to and it just happened to be the perfect location to grow flowers. We grow our flowers using the most natural ways possible. We don’t till the ground and no chemicals are ever applied at any point during the year.

Our hope at The Romestead Flower Farm is that we can share the quiet beauty that we get from our farm and that you can take a little piece of our peace home with you.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning an entirely new skill is never easy. There is so much information and different ways of going about growing flowers that trial and error (lots of error) has been how we have gotten ourselves to where we are. Mother nature is a fickle thing and she has shown her power almost every year. From frost to hail to trees falling on our home we have been through a lot these last couple of years. But then the flowers bloom and every weed pulled, and plant lost becomes worth it. We also struggle to commit to our chemical-free and no-till flowers which is a much longer process to see your soil develop and the weeds start to decrease.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We really want to give back to our community. Especially when it comes to the children in our area. These days being indoors and on a screen has taken over much of our youth’s time. We strive to get kids outdoors and discover how beautiful and fun nature can be. We host several free events for kids and make sure to donate time and money to other areas in our community including donate flowers those residing in senior care centers and getting involved in youth sports.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The biggest support for us would be sharing your experiences. Tell a friend or family member about us and show off your flowers to anyone and everyone.
