Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Magnuson.
Hi Anne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a hairstylist in 2017. It wasn’t what I always wanted to do! I originally was going to school for graphic design, but it wasn’t for me at the time. So instead, I thought maybe cosmetology would be the best of both worlds for what I was looking for! It has the creative expression side of the job that I was looking for and is very mentally stimulating with the ever changing trends!
Turns out, I was pretty good at it and kept up with hairstyling part-time until it became a full-time career for me!
Today, I keep up my passion and love for this job behind the chair at Salon Ori in St.Paul, MN. I love to learn about what’s new in the hairstyling industry and how can I cultivate that into the work I do. This job always keeps me on my toes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy, we can start there. This job can lead to burnout for some people, speaking from experience! It takes a lot of time, patience, and out of the box thinking to build a career like this. You have to kind of do it all! That’s including doing your own marketing, managing your time spent at work with each client, coming up with new ideas, using communication skills all day long, etc. Hairstylists can be a one person band at times!
I’ve had to learn how to create boundaries for myself when it comes to pouring in my time and energy into this career so I can show up as my best, most authentic self for my clients and new clients!
I was very shy in the beginning and still am in some ways, but I have learned to use my personality and quirkiness to my advantage. I’ve found that the people who are meant to find me, will find me. I think having that mindset has really helped me find that confidence to grow in this career.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in detailed cuts and blonding!
For haircutting, I love anything to do with razor styled cuts, layers, and bangs! Bangs are really fun because each face is different and it’s pretty cool to make it fit to each person’s style. As for color, I love blondes and brondes! Redheads too! Anything that is lived-in and effortless is like my absolute favorite thing to see. Making the perfect cut and color combination on someone will literally make my whole week.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Right now I’m working on fine tuning my haircutting skills, especially my razor cuts and working with natural wave in hair. I’m just playing around with air drying styles and customizing it to each client I see! I have grown to love cowlicks and whirls in hair instead of fighting them. It’s been fun to experiment with that and successfully use those skills at work!
