Daily Inspiration: Meet Breanna Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Kelly.

Breanna Kelly

Hi Breanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I wanted to do hair from a very early age. I started coloring and cutting people’s hair in my bathroom and doing weddings and formal events, all while in high school. After graduating high school, I went to the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis and immediately fell in love with everything I was doing. Aveda was a great brand to be a part of and learn from. I always knew I wanted a salon someday; everyone close to me in my life knew how badly I wanted that. I finally leaped after 6 years behind the chair! I was in a commission-based salon, which I loved then, but I always felt I wanted to do more or wasn’t doing enough. I soon found myself drawing up business plans and making spreadsheet after spreadsheet on how to get this going. After talking to many stylists throughout Minnesota and getting a feel for the commission vs. renting style, I concluded that renting was a better fit for me and something I wanted to offer other stylists around me if they felt renting was their path. That’s how the Rose Room came to be! You 100% get out of this career what you put into it. A lot of hours put in to make the salon I had dreamt of, a lot of hours behind the chair to get that salon up and running, and a whole lot of hopes and dreams that my salon would be a place others would want to call their “salon home.” We’ve been in our location for 4 1/2 years, and all 6 stylist chairs have been full for the last 3! We also have an esthi room for all your waxing and lash needs!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, I opened my doors to the salon two months before the 2020 shutdown happened. That was by far the biggest setback we have had. At the time, I only had three stylists, including myself and one this; we were thrown for quite the loop. As soon as we could open our doors again, I worked 10-12 hours daily to catch up. While also trying to be a wife and a mama. We weren’t alone, and I know every business was struggling to figure out its next move at that time with all of the unknowns, But we made it, we did it, and we are still here thriving! The biggest shout-out to the guests of the Rose Room for supporting us through everything! Every business will have struggles, but that was by far the biggest one we have ever encountered. It can only go up from that!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairstylist going on 11 years behind the chair. I specialize in blonding and extension services but love any coloring service. I’m the most proud of keeping a salon up and running through the shutdown, and to this day, keeping a salon running that is filled with girls who I can’t wait to spend my days with. I’m pretty lucky to be surrounded by these women. I’m proud to tell my three kids always to follow their dreams and have the Rose Room to show them it’s possible.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Oh man, I’m not even sure about this question! I feel like a lot of people know most things about me. I love to do photography on the side. I grew up playing softball and loved every second I spent on the field. My husband and I have known each other since 6th grade. I’m a pretty open book, so I feel like there aren’t many surprising things about me 😂
