Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanda Ounkong.
Hi Chanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I have been passionate about taking photographs since I was in middle school. I got my first digital camera in 7th grade for the school newspaper. I wasn’t the greatest photographer at that time, but it was really fun going to school events with friends!
Then for my high school graduation, I was gifted my first DLSR camera, and once I became more serious I upgraded cameras in my second year of college. I have been taking photos for about ten years, and I still love every minute!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had struggles along the way, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I had many people in my life who have always asked me what I can do as a photographer and how I can create income with it. To be honest, I was never in it for the money.
I fell in love with photography because I could express myself and show the world what I see through the lens. Throughout the ten years, I have been holding a camera, I have been able to amaze the people who doubted me, and now they support my success.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most recently, I have been getting more into wedding photography, and I love it! What I love about photographing weddings is being a part of the couple’s big day. Something about capturing special moments and creating memorable photographs makes my heart smile.
I like having two or three check-ins with my couple to ensure everything goes smoothly. Before I agree to photograph a wedding, I like to have a get-to-know-you meeting with my couples. I want to know who I’m photographing and what they are looking for in a photographer. I want to ensure we are a great match before we sign the wedding contract.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Take photos of everything and everyone! Don’t be afraid that your photos won’t turn out good. You are still learning with every snap that you take.
I wasn’t the greatest at first, but I gained so much knowledge when I would ask people for photo critiques. Yes, some critiques might hurt you but those of the critiques that you need to hear to get better!
