Hi Cynthia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am Cynthia Álvarez, Latina at heart. My journey began at university, where I studied Nutrition and Dietetics and graduated as a Nutritionist in 2018 in my home country, Ecuador. Despite my passion for nutrition, job opportunities were limited, leading me to a crucial point in my life. It was then that my husband suggested I pursue a dream that had always been in my heart since I was young: makeup. In our countries, makeup is often not seen as a professional career, but with the unconditional support of my husband and family, I decided to follow that path.
In 2019, I graduated as a Professional Makeup Artist and began working independently, complementing my two careers and offering a comprehensive service to women, combining a healthy lifestyle and beauty. For about a year, I worked as a nutritionist and makeup artist, until, in 2020, I got a job at a prestigious multinational pharmaceutical company as a sales representative for an adult nutritional line. This experience provided me with invaluable professional growth and awakened new skills and knowledge in me.
However, my passion for makeup and the world of beauty never faded. During weekends, holidays, and weeknights, I dedicated myself to offering professional makeup services, teaching self-makeup classes, and continually training in this art that has always been in my heart. Gradually, I became convinced that I wanted to dedicate myself entirely to professional makeup. I wanted to highlight women’s beauty and empower them, and connecting with each of my clients was what truly moved me.
In 2023, a year full of lessons, uncertainty, difficult moments, and learning, I made the most important decision of my life. I decided to follow my passion, bet on my dream, and prioritize my family’s well-being. With a suitcase full of dreams and goals, I arrived in the United States with a lot of fear but also with a lot of determination. During this time, I have met wonderful people who have taught and supported me on this journey. Today, I work every day to be the best version of myself, and I am happy because I am dedicated to what I always desired.
I am grateful to God and my family for every step of this journey, and I am excited about what the future holds for me. My story is a testimony that with faith, passion, and perseverance, dreams can come true.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has not been easy, but each challenge has been a learning opportunity that has significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. The most important challenges I have faced along this path have been the fear of failure and a lack of confidence in my abilities. Overcoming these obstacles has been rewarding and has helped me get to know myself better as I continue to build my best version. Currently, I am still facing challenges such as adapting to a new culture and language in this country, as well as the challenge of further establishing myself as a professional.

My professional journey began in Ecuador as a Professional Makeup Artist and Nutritionist, specializing in the art of makeup and hairstyling, particularly for brides, social events, and editorial work. I complemented my studies with courses and certifications from the best makeup artists, hairstylists, photographers, and content creators across the continent. Additionally, I hold a specialization in airbrush makeup, bridal hairstyling, and professional photography.
I am known for my ability to understand and convey my clients’ vision of how they see themselves, offering a comprehensive and personalized approach that highlights each individual’s natural beauty. I empower them and help boost their confidence, making them look radiant on their special day. My commitment to providing each client with a unique makeup experience, combined with my constant desire to learn and improve new techniques in this art, allows me to achieve polished, exclusive, and updated finishes-qualities that distinguish me in my field. Each client is unique, and my goal is always to exceed their expectations and provide a memorable experience.
As a professional makeup artist, I have also ventured into creating quality content and beauty photography on social media. This has allowed me to consolidate my knowledge and offer advanced courses and content creation workshops to colleagues in my field, aiming to help them grow exponentially. Additionally, I conduct comprehensive self-makeup courses for women who wish to embrace their unique beauty and highlight the best in themselves. These courses are designed for the modern, multifaceted, and busy woman, who often neglects self-care due to time constraints. My objective is to empower them to make themselves a priority and showcase the best version of themselves.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Being a makeup artist is much more than applying products; it’s a journey of self-discovery and growth, both professionally and personally. Along this path, I have learned that perseverance is essential. Every challenge and every client are opportunities to learn and improve, and we must never give up in the face of difficulties.
Additionally, staying updated on trends and techniques is key to providing exceptional service. The makeup industry is constantly evolving, and adapting to these changes not only makes us more competent but also empowers us to give our clients the best of ourselves.
The love and dedication we put into our work are seeds that will bear great fruit, and when we work with passion, that energy is reflected in every application and interaction, creating memorable experiences for our clients.
Getting to know ourselves deeply is essential; reaching that self-awareness allows us to build our identity and highlight our unique essence. In a world where comparison is easy, it’s vital to remember that each of us has a style and technique that set us apart.
