Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Mason.
Hi Elijah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my artist journey as a concert photographer just shooting the local shows, and for a lot of my performing friends around the scene. I had always had a great love for music, and had always thought about one day becoming an artist, but at the time concert photography was perfect. It wasn’t until my 2nd year of doing this when I decided to go into music. I actually took quite a bit of inspiration to become an artist after seeing Amine live at the Cabooze around this time frame. Something about the energy, and being able to create such a happy and safe space for people to be themselves and enjoy the music was so beautiful to me, and I decided that music was something that I wanted to pursue for sure. That’s kind of where it all began, and the rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most things in life, there have been plenty of road bumps along the way. I’ve struggled a lot with my own mental health, as well as a lot of physical health issues, and of course a lot of financial issues. However, I always take it all in stride and use everyday as another day to keep learning, growing, and bettering myself as an artist and overall human being.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a producer/singer/songwriter, and I specialize mainly in singing and writing. Always been known for a very avant-garde approach to music, and I love pushing the boundaries of genres and am always trying to create new and exciting songs. I think something I am most proud of is just the wonderful people around me. I love seeing my friends and other artists around me thrive and succeed. The music scene is growing in Minneapolis, and I couldn’t be more proud and happy for myself and all the other artists working day and night to continue pushing it all forward. I would say the thing that would set me apart from the others is just the attention to details. No matter whether it comes to the songs, music videos, rollout, or even performances, I always mainly focus on the art and aesthetic behind everything. Art before the numbers. Always.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is always hard, I’m a pretty socially anxious person myself, haha. I will say however that music has really allowed and encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone more, and I have met so many great people and had so many great experiences because of it. I would say my advice that I would give is something I wish someone told me when I started, and that is to just take that leap, talk to people, be yourself, and be confident in who you are and what you do. The rest will follow suit.
