Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Gilmer.
Emma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started sharing my life on social media on 2018, I loved being vulnerable and sharing my struggles knowing for years I was alone in my own. When I started to open up online about my faith in Jesus, and how much my life had changed because of that change, I experienced a large volume of women express how they now felt like they had a sister online who can help them. I started to share my struggles with comparison and anxiety in college and my young adult life. This opened up a new community of women online who experinced the same things as me. This encourgaed me to continue to be vulnerable in all areas, knowing when we are quite about our struggles we feel isolated, and lonley. When we open up, we experince we are not going through these things alone. I contiune to share my life as I got enagage, married, and now had our first baby. I love being a joyful space online in a dark world, I pray my corner of the internt can be a place where we people less alone and more encouraged.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles along the way were for sure there. I struggled with comparison, it’s easy to get lost in numbers, like counts, comments, etc. Engagement is important to know if you have “made it” when it comes to success on social media. I have learned that another women’s success is not my failure. Cheering others on and not getting caught up in comparison and jealousy is key if you want to be successful in any field . I have learned my success and joy doesn’t come from numbers, it comes from me feeling like I am posting the content that brings me joy and can be life giving to others online.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently a self emplyed stay at home mom to my 8 month old baby. I am learning the balance between running my photography business, as well as growing and being consistent on my social media. I have been a photographer for over 8 years and took some time off the past 2 year, but I am slowly jumping back in to making it apart of my career again. I am most proud of myself for taking the leap to quit my 9-5 and jump into being self employed. It has came with it’s own struggles as anyone who runs their own business can understand, but I would rather go through hard things while chasing after my dreams, than always wonder what would’ve happened if I didn’t try.
Any big plans?
Future plans are just to contoune my social media presence and contiune to post content that bring people joy, and helps them feel less alone. I have had recent big changes of having a baby and quitting my 9-5 to purse my dream in content creation in all areas. I am excited to see where the next few months and years take me, I want to continue to say yes to opportunities that come my way, and make leaps to try new things!
