Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Brandt.
Hi Erik, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a musician as long as I can remember. I started with the piano and at some point in middle school I realized that I could create my own music and not just read what was on the pages provided for me.
From there I started playing in bands and creating my own bands and making lots of lifelong friends through creating music. I started my primary group, the Urban Hillbilly Quartet, out of the ashes of several college bands back in 1995. All these years later, we’re still playing and recording music, sometimes as a band, and sometimes me as a solo artist, which is what my new album is.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are no smooth roads for musicians, unless their parents are entertainment lawyers!!
Most of my struggles as a musician have centered around trying to make a livelihood out of creating and performing music. Fortunately, I have the good fortune of being a high school teacher, as well as a musician and I love how these two professions complement one another
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets my music apart from other bands is that I am an unapologetic musical omnivore.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is very important in the music business, especially meeting the right people at the right time, but nothing replaces consistent hard work over a long period of time
