Today we’d like to introduce you to Hal Reynolds.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in tech began when I was 18. I had come back from MN from NY after spending one year here in MN and fell in love with the state. I was working at Best Buy and found my calling. Tech felt very natural as well as engaging with the community. I was the bridge for them and everyday was a new and exciting adventure. This lead me into retail leadership. I ran stores for Best Buy, Apple, and Circuit City. After twenty plus years it was clear to me that I got my joy from developing our young leaders of tomorrow. I got the most joy when they figured it out and exceeded expectations. This lead me down the road of creating my own company. It was clear to me after spending time as the Director of Program Operations for the Best Buy Teen Tech Centers. That I wanted to move the needle here but in my own unique way. I wanted to truly meet youth in spaces they felt empowered. Then unleash the human potential combined with tech to help give direction to what was possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a company and especially in tech is never easy. Tech is an expensive space to enter and you find very few black own tech companies for that reason. Also my concept isn’t as simple as most investor would like it to be. They don’t like complexity. They want a App that is clear on what it solves. Much of my success has been with a few main supporters and lots of effort on my behalf.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well I’m known for people development and driving top notch performance that is sustainable. I build culture and get the most out of people. This is also what I’m most proud of, it’s always the people. The results are great, however you either built people up on the way to the top or tore them down. In my two plus decades in retail I was invited to over 50 weddings, baby showers, and birthday parties. This is telling for me, this is when you understand you’ve become family. Not just a boss and employee relationship. I specialized in tech but the reality is, it is always changing. What I thrived at, was preparing our teams for the real world after there time in retail had ended.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I love to take risk. I’m a disrupter by nature, so taking risk just comes nature to me. That said, I always use my value system when taking these risk. You’ll hear this trend from me. The big risk are always people. This could be a hire that can shake up the culture in a good way or promoting someone that not all your leaders align on. I love giving underdogs a chance and watching them make it happen. When you believe in something, it isn’t really a risk because you will do what it takes to see it over the top.
