Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is no straight line to success…To live the life of a freelancer within the entertainment industry there are a lot of ups and downs. Learning early to save money because you don’t know exactly when the next project will present itself. The hardest part was early in my career learning to balance the money I had to survive.
The hardest part was not being able to go on vacations, hang out with friends at expensive restaurants, and things involving a lot of money, so missing out on times with friends was hard, but in life, you have to prioritize what is important to you.
A great lesson I learned was to always be sharpening my skill set. In between major projects I also pushed to work on areas that needed improvement. So in the beginning of my career I did not have experience with teleprompter, so I would practice with my laptop and take smaller jobs that included teleprompter so that I could get the experience. When starting out I did not have a lot of live event hosting experience , so I made sure to host any event I could find in NYC, even if it was for free. I did this just to sharpen my skills for later projects. Those were some hard lessons but they were the best because the skills I learned back then I am still using today.
Another struggle was to learn not to judge my career with others because that is a losing game. We are all in life on our own path and need to be the best versions of ourselves, not trying to be something else or someone else. Make sure you have clear-cut goals. make a plan to get closer to them each day, and then go for it!
Life is really all about struggles… your life will depend on how YOU handle difficult situations. You get to decide how you react and work with your emotions, not letting your feelings take you over and put you in places that you do not want to be in. The struggle is actually beautiful because it is an opportunity to show yourself what you are made of. Embrace the struggle and show the world what you got!!!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am lucky enough to have found a profession that is close to my natural personality traits. I am forever curious so as a Television Host, event host, reporter, and on-air personality my curiosity makes my job so much fun! I specialize in interviewing people because I love to find out the WHY behind the decisions people make and what we can learn from each other within a conversation never gets old. I also have fallen in love with hosting live events, such as becoming the official co-host for New Year’s Eve live in Times Square for the webcast and TV.
I am most proud of my ability to handle the chaos with love! When you host live tv or events there is always an element of the unknown and things changing all the time, so you never get comfortable.. The key is to stay comfortable! So when the segments change and you are live on TV with 100 million people watching you can remain calm even though behind the scenes in the control room there is a bunch happening but the viewers will never know because I remained calm.
The most important decision I made was to use my skills to also help people in any way that I can. So I have been lucky enough to travel the world and work as an event host with some incredible nonprofits and companies to help out the people that are truly in need.
My career is awesome and unpredictable! One day I am sitting down with Micheal B Jordan to discuss his latest movie and the next day I could be traveling the USA for The Weather Channel looking for the best local food spots. I am super lucky!
I believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to multi-task within any situation and to be able to find the moments that will bring the viewers into the story we are trying to tell. I also try to make each project I work on as much fun as possible and people sometimes forget that fun is everything!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
I don’t have advice, because my views and ideas might not work for everyone. But I can offer a few key things I have done to help me advance in my life and career. First, decide what you really want! And it’s ok if it is 2 or 3 different things. Then write down each goal you want and be specific. Next up is creating a game plan to get you to achieve each goal. Start first with researching people who have been successful in that field and learn about what it took for them to get it and learn from their stories. Then Create a plan for each week doing something that will get you closer to your goal and also get you experience so that when your opportunity happens you will be ready. Last is to reach out to mentors in whatever field you want to go in and ask them every question you can think of! You would be surprised that some people will actually help.. they just need to be asked!
I suggest being bold! Go directly after what you want, and if you have done the personal work and have your resume, reel, and package together, and you have practiced so much that you actually have skills, this should give you the confidence to be bold and reach out to anyone.
A super side note, expect the rejection… a lot of rejection! It is part of the process. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can move on and look toward the next opportunity! I have gotten a bunch of jobs that at first I was rejected and they later reached out because they remembered me! So always be professional even if they don’t choose you then.. because they might pick you for something else tomorrow.
Another piece of advice I would give is to start your own project or show you would like to host! What you will learn doing it on your own will come back to help you later on down the line. There is no experience like LIFE!
