Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Sauck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Sauck.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved photography. From disposable cameras, to my mom’s old film point-and-shoot, to my first 1.5 megapixel digital brick – I couldn’t get enough! I went to college for graphic design, and took every photography class I possibly could, digital and film. My favorite part of my degree was learning photoshop for digital photos and spending time manipulating film in the darkroom. After college, I spent time at a photography studio in Maple Grove. I then married my husband and moved to Southern Minnesota in 2009, where I began working as a photographer for Womeninc Magazine. In about 2011, I began photographing area families, but it wasn’t until 2019 that I decided to really invest in my business. I took more photography classes, business and marketing classes, and finally decided to look at it as something more than a hobby. And I fell even more in love with it all!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest obstacle has been my self doubt, or “imposter syndrome.” It’s what kept me at basically a hobby for all of those years. But besides having the most supportive husband, I have the most amazing clients who have greatly encouraged me. I continue to take classes to always improve my skills and be able to offer my absolute best to my clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I primarily capture relationships: families, newborns, couples. I love to photograph the way people interact with each other and try to show who they are.

Relationships are actually a big part of my whole business – I want to establish a relationship with my clients. I want them to feel comfortable with me, every step of the way. I am there to help from styling and preparing for a session, to ordering artwork after. Because the more comfortable they feel with me, the more it comes across in their photos.

By the end of it all, I love feeling as if I’ve made a new friend. It’s one of the things I love most about what I do.

What’s next?
I am planning on building an office. This would allow me to have more scheduling flexibility for consultations and proofing appointments. It would be a place for clients to “shop” my client closet in person. It would also be a place I could proudly and easily display artwork, so clients could get a better idea of what their portraits could become.
