Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Mohn.
Hi Jill, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for flowers began at a flower shop in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; “Floral Impressions”. A “Help Wanted” sign was displayed in their front window and I had time on my hands from being laid-off from a seasonal business. Walking through the door, greeted by a friendly smile and the overwhelming smell of flowers, I answered the first question asked of me during my interview.
“Can you make a bow?”
The rest is history as they say…
My knowledge and experience have come from the many creative, talented designers who I have worked side-by-side with, who have generously shared with me what they know.
Florists are some of the hardest-working people I know! Working in local flower shops on and off through the past 20-some years, attending workshops and seminars and continuing education online is what equips me for designing.
It is my goal to continue doing what I love by offering quality, creative, floral design for people looking to enhance their life with flowers. I now work out of my studio on a limited basis as I continue to work full-time in another line of work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? For the most part, it has been smooth. I love to learn new processes and continue to challenge myself professionally. The biggest struggle for me has been learning to keep a good balance with my family life, regular job, and floral design. There is only so much of you to go around. Each aspect of my life is so important. It’s hard to see when one part of your life is starting to suffer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative person who loves to use flowers as her canvas and paint. The colors, scents and textures are so stimulating to the senses. I found that there was room for another wedding florist in our area and that has been a majority of my work in addition to funeral work and everyday bouquets. I plan to design more in the future with dried and silk elements, slowing easing my way out of the wedding world.
I find it very fulfilling to have a bride reach out after her wedding to tell you how happy she was with her flowers. In fact, I don’t really rest well until I do hear back from them!
Funeral work is very emotional for me. I try and find out as much as I can about the person who has passed on, reflecting on them and their life as I’m creating memorial pieces.
I am most proud of my family’s support and involvement. My husband built my studio and is always available to lend a helping hand as well as my daughters and grandchildren! My proudest moment as a florist was when my work was featured in the “Florist Review” magazine with one of my first wedding clients.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I found an increase in people conveying their love and support by sending flowers during COVID.
