Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Hoisington.
Hi Jordan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in northern Minnesota surrounded by nature and had little to do. So I was very much into creating and exploring as my main hobbies. My mom worked for the airlines so I was exposed to traveling frequently and immersing myself in other cities. When back in Minnesota I played around with many art mediums including the beauty side of things (such as hair and makeup). I then studied art in college before joining the beauty industry and I feel that helped shape my craft. Having a strong sense of color theory and painting! I now have a small Etsy shop and hair business in both Portland and Minneapolis. When I’m not in the salon I’m usually traveling, crafting or selling at a local art event.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The pandemic was definitely a struggle with not knowing where my industry would go. Working so closely with people and if clients would come back after things opened again. During that long time off I gave a little more attention to my Etsy shop, created more and sold my items online! I was grateful to have a decently lucrative backup plan at the time. It also put into perspective that I couldn’t be in one place for too long. So I decided then to split my time between the Midwest and the west coast.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As far as my art goes. Since I grew up around nature I’ve always been collecting bone, flowers and random things since I was little! I like to repurpose natural elements and give them a second chance at beauty. Everything in my work is ethically sourced and died naturally.
For my salon work, I specialize mostly in blondes, balayage and vivids! This gives me a wide array of people to work on every day so it’s always exciting and something new. I feel having a strong art background helps a lot with color theory, shape and painting. Every day feels like an art project. I never dread working and absolutely love my career! I feel that’s most important.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I feel that social media platforms play a huge part in connecting with people and showcasing work. With how everything is these days it’s a really helpful tool to connect with everyone! I know it gets a bad rap. But when used correctly it can open many opportunities.
