Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Espinosa.
Hi Joshua, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first picked up a guitar when I was about 15 years old and fell in love. It was pretty quick that I started adding lyrics to chords, as I’ve always been something of a natural writer. I gigged for years around LA, San Francisco and then Minneapolis, doing the singer/songwriter thing and sideman hustle while picking up various other instruments along the way (now I play 10).
I never really found much traction until I had a chance meeting with local guitar hero, Tom Lieberman, who played on ‘A Prairie Home Companion.’ He hooked me up with the acclaimed Kevin Bowe, we had some fun making an album, and now here I am, privileged to talk with you.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth road! I was about to quit the serious musician thing up until I got mixed up with Tom. The stars just never aligned for me until he helped me out, and there comes a time where you just accept how things are for whatever reasons.
Not to mention that I’ve set some lofty goals when it comes to things I want to be able to do on multiple instruments, and there’s a daily mental cost that comes with striving toward those goals. Like, you have to fail a million times before you get there, and failing, while valuable can also be tough to swallow.
So, I guess I was just tired of the seriousness of it all, and wanted to go find that old loving feeling again…
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think I’m just good at being me and sharing my own thoughts and experiences. When I do that against a backdrop of an instrument that I’ve worked my tail off to learn, it’s easy for people to appreciate.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I know when I am in the presence of someone who has taken an interest in me and my development, I try to soak in as much as I can, listen as much as possible and then go try to apply what I heard.
