Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Young.
Joshua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a Beatmaker/Producer by the name of Jomy. I’ve been doing music as long as I can remember, in some shape or form. There were certain programs such as Cool Edit or Acid Pro that I would use early on. I would place songs in those programs and loop the beginning or ending, while mashing them together with other songs. I didn’t really understand what I was doing at the time, but over the course of a few years that evolved to looking into samples and studying the way songs were put together – which lead me to making my own songs. I would say 2009 is when I realized how much I enjoyed production and what I could do with the skills I accumulated over time.
As of 2019, I would say I’ve settled into my own sound and the workflow that suits me best, pulling from samples and creating unique and abstract percussion in my work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Time and mental health are the two biggest obstacles I face. Time is always an issue when balancing a full time job along with other aspects of adulthood that always stand in the way. Searching for a balance that works for me was imperative to being able to keep myself active. Mental health is an obstacle as well since I struggle with perfectionism. Learning to let go of certain things is something I think many musicians can understand. Since I’ve settled into my sound, I don’t find myself getting bogged down as often. I’m able to find beauty in flaws. The music making process seems to flow naturally for the time being, feeling less forced.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in music production. I’m known for creating instrumental pieces that are heavily influenced by jazz, hip-hop and foreign vinyl. I’m most proud of my recent work, entitled Captain. Thus far, this album encapsulates what I’ve wanted to express for many years. In my opinion, it sets me apart from others in the structures I use, percussion, and textures I enjoy adding to my music. I have collaborated with a few local artists such as Lspeaks and Kaoz, and have a couple projects in the works.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. Maybe cliche, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Hard work and dedication can and will set you apart from others. One thing I’ve learned is making my own path and avoiding mimicry has led to the success I’ve experienced thus far.
