Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Olson.
Hi Josie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, my name is Josie, the owner of a small business called Cozmic Crystalz Co. Im a Minnesota native, born and raised. I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the things that it creates. Especially rocks and gems. As a child I remember collecting rocks from the beach with my older brother and smashing them open to see what they looked like inside. Fast forward to 2020, I saw an idea that caught my eye. Something I could do with rocks. Its called a crystal cage or some call it a crystal pouch. Its a necklace made completely from cord of any material. The technique used for the necklace is called Macrame, which is a form of art that revolves around knot tying. In 2020, some might call it the “Covid Era” or “Lockdown” I grew extremely bored at home and I wanted to try something new. So I recalled the idea that I saw online for the necklaces. I tried it once, and then again, and again. I kept making necklaces until I realized I had over 50 necklaces, and only one neck to wear them on. Once lockdown was over I had signed up for some local craft fairs that I had found online. I quickly realized I needed more products. So I had learned to make bracelets, earrings, headbands, rings, windchimes, and more. All made with rocks and crystals. I have been doing this for 6 years now. Since starting my business I have expanded to making jewelry with seashells as well as rocks and minerals. I pride myself on my growth and knowledge and my passion for art and nature. I really have enjoyed where this journey has, and will continue to take me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This road has not always been a smooth one. Some struggles I’ve had along the way include: issues driving traffic to my website, resulting in my transition to Etsy. Sometimes I don’t even make a single sale at local events. I don’t let it bother me, or get me down, I understand my crafts and jewelry aren’t for everyone. Still, I continue to do what I love, and try again next time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create handmade jewelry, accessories, and decorations with crystals and seashells. I specialize in macrame crystal necklaces. The macrame necklaces are the first item I ever made and sold. I am extremely proud of my perseverance when I things get slow for me, I don’t give up on my craft. I do what I love, and love what I do. I get excited when I sell a necklace especially, because it makes me feel full inside that someone loves my art enough to buy and wear it. I feel especially proud also, when someone who makes a purchase, mentions that its a gift for a loved one. What sets me apart from others is my many options for necklace styles, and the care and precision that goes into making each necklace. All my stones are hand picked from my favorite metaphysical shop, The Enchanted Rock Garden, in Richfield MN. I pick the crystals based on their color, pattern, shape, size, etc. I take extreme pride in the care that goes into making each piece of jewelry. I also take great pride in keeping my jewelry affordable for everyone.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I want to give a big shoutout to my family, Terry (dad), Kristy (mom), and brother, Kenny. They have always supported me from the beginning, and I couldn’t have done it without their love and support.
