Daily Inspiration: Meet Kristin Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Edwards

Hi Kristin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began dancing at Estyre Brindle Dance Theater (EBDT) in St Paul when I was 5 years old. I loved it all from the first day. I danced throughout my school age years, into college and continue teach as an adult. Many of my friendships span 35+ years with those I met in this magical space and being a part of EBDT has always been a source of comfort and belonging for me. When our long time leader Barb Brenny passed unexpectedly in June 2024, the dance community was not sure what would happen to this hidden gem. My husband and I purchased the dance studio as well as the building in Nov 2024 and are working to revive the business, now MarKey Studio. My hope is that I can continue to be part of a space that allows the community, young and not so young, a place that is welcoming, helps grow confidence and responsibility, allows freedom of expression through all types of body movement, all mixed with a whole lot of fun.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have always loved to dance. Being on stage allowed me to express myself and feel free. After college, I was teaching and thought about buying the studio and making it my career. But its not an easy one- night classes, working weekend mornings, missing out on after work family time. My husband and I got married and had 2 fabulous boys who are busy with sports and school . So the busyness of the world took over. When we lost Barb I was not sure we could make it work. My husband stood by me and encouraged me (convinced me!) that we had to at least try. Managing a full time job, the admin side of the studio, teaching, parenting, no rest days and trying to be a good human is exhausting but I would not have it any other way. Seeing those kids when I walk in the building is the best feeling.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At an early age, I knew I wanted to be involved in dance in any way I could. Barb was always supporting and pushing me to gain new experiences. I did conferences in Chicago and New York to help grow my skills and be exposed to all types of movement. When I settled into adult life, I saw many of my friends and family engrossed in the competitive dance world. Wow, those dancers are amazing. But I did feel as a teacher I was missing that community feeling in dance. Where did the kids go who wanted to have some fun for an hour or two a week, learn how to move their body, make some lifelong connections and be able to participate in other activities? Every business has its niche- MarKey Studio is focused on welcoming all levels of skill, creating friendships and safe spaces through dance, bringing in the community to expose dancers to different cultures and ways of movement and shining light on the enjoyment of dance!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Through this process I have had to lean on many of the relationships built at EBDT over the last 40 years. I am so thankful to have friends, teachers, parents and dancers that believe in us to get this going. I have found people who let me be myself and allow honest conversations is where the most growth comes from. Don’t be afraid to reach out to ask for advice or help, especially when you feel overwhelmed. You will be amazed at how many people truly want to help. Look to your elders for advice, rely on programs designed for the business you are pursuing and do not give up. Today is a good day to go for your dreams.
