Daily Inspiration: Meet Lane Soderberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lane Soderberg.

Hi Lane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We have all known each other and played in various Minneapolis bands for years. I kinda dipped out of playing in bands for a few years and was making black metal records by myself in my basement. I kinda got bored with that, just making songs with headphones on and not feeling the volume of a loud amp behind me, and started jamming with some other friends. Joel and Craig’s band was winding down so we got together and started making some songs, and here we are.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been smooth. None of us have any ambitions of being rock stars. It’s kinda something we have to do. I get songs in my head and have to get them out, and it’s so satisfying to hear them physically played really loud with my friends. I have maybe more fun at practice than playing shows. It’s a form of therapy for us. Playing live always gives me anxiety. I see music in colors and sometimes worry that our sound might be too vibrant, or conversely too dark… so it’s always kind of nervewracking, until we start playing and the gear is all working and everything sounds good, then I’m fine. Funny how 110 decibels of fuzzed out guitar kinda feels like a warm blanket, and then I just don’t care.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, I guess the best thing about Deep Dark Lake is that I don’t really know what we are. I can’t put us in any genre. Our music might have some mainstream appeal, but that’s not where we come from. Not to sound corny, but we take our inspiration from the “deep dark lakes” where there is a fine line between something really beautiful and something real dark and dangerous. I grew up next to Lake Superior, and that lake just radiates that vibe. It’s a big inspiration.

What does success mean to you?
Someone hearing our songs and feeling something they were perhaps scared to feel and being ok with it… not feeling alone. I’ve had people tell me that our songs have made them cry… that’s pretty amazing. But it’s also really cool to see people just feeling the vibe and smiling about it. And I’ve had people ask me about the lyrics and wanting to know where they came from… I generally don’t have a good answer, but that’s cool… they can make their own interpretations.
