Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Tays.
Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I opened this interior design business on my own 10 years ago and over time it has bloomed into more than I ever imagined. I now have an amazing team and we are lucky enough to work on projects locally as well as nation wide!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building your own business is never smooth! Ha! There are many struggles along the way, including learning how to navigate growing a team, overseeing hundreds of details in our projects, big and small, building relationships and trust with the community and others in the industry, and much more. But we have grit here at Tays & Co. Design Studios! No obstacle is too big for us to dive in and overcome. We try to remain positive, and lean into the idea that there is alway a way through any issue with enough effort and teamwork!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an award winning design firm, we are best known for our use of natural elements and vintage goods in our design aesthetics. Although we work within a variety of design styles you will always find a through line in all our projects with our use of organic materials which bring the outdoors inside. We also feel very strongly about the reuse of materials, so reclaimed wood, vintage furnishings, family heirlooms, etc, is an important part of how we design and ensure spaces feel personal to each client. Our spaces feel elevated, rooted in a true sense of home and are each unique to the client and there way of living. I am proud of the way we show up for our clients and for each other as a small team. Every little step in the process from start to finish is important to us and done with intention and is given much thought and we want that to be felt.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk is a little scary to me personally, I prefer to know the outcome of things before hand, BUT in everything creative there is risk. It is inevitable. You have to be willing to be vulnerable and confident enough to enough put your designs out there for folks to judge and hope they are received in the way you planned. Running a business just comes with risk, but we do try to way those risks carefully and ensure we can execute each design fully to its highest level.
Overall, I do believe without risk, true success is very difficult. So lean in!
