MONiCA PARAVICINI

Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a Latina woman business owner and an immigrant from Bolivia, I have faced numerous challenges on my journey to achieving the American dream. It has been twenty-four years since I moved to the USA, and I had to overcome several obstacles to get where I am today. Before moving to the USA, I pursued a degree in business administration and have always aspired to become a successful business owner. However, the journey could have been smoother. Initially, I had to learn the language and gain work experience in a new environment.

Last summer, I decided to leap of faith and explore the opportunity to buy a Nautical Bowls franchise. After learning that there was one store for sale, I left my job and took on the challenge of a new business venture. Being a business owner has always been a dream of mine, and I admire other business owners who dare to build an empire and create a successful business. I am determined to realize my American dream and become a successful business owner someday.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am inspired to achieve the American dream by becoming a successful business owner, but I acknowledge that it is a challenging goal. I have faced challenges, such as learning a new language and gaining work experience in a new place I now call home. Despite the difficulties, I was determined to succeed. I attended ESL school in the mornings and worked as a nurse assistant at a nursing home in the afternoons. The experience was challenging but helped me adjust to a new culture that was not mine. I remained optimistic and focused on my goals. I knew the cultural shock was temporary, and I was confident I would overcome my insecurities and achieve my personal goals.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After making a life-changing decision to move to the United States, it took me three years to purchase my house, where my two beautiful children were born. During that time, I worked at a call center for a decade, where I helped customers with vehicle-related issues and provided top-notch customer service. This job taught me essential skills, such as effective communication and problem-solving, which proved invaluable in my future career in the finance industry. Later, my family and I moved to Minnesota, following my husband’s career goals. I started working as a Client Specialist at a bank, where I had the opportunity to interact with customers face-to-face. My job involved assisting clients with daily transactions, such as sending wires and ordering inventory for the branch. I thoroughly enjoyed helping customers and providing them the best possible service for five years. However, I soon realized I wanted to know more about the bank’s backend operations and decided to transition into the operation department. In this new role, I was responsible for various tasks, such as activating debit cards, processing NFS and ACH transactions, and processing wires. My time in the Operations Department was an exciting and invaluable learning experience, as I gained in-depth knowledge of the bank’s internal processes and the financial industry.

What were you like growing up?

  • I want to learn to take Instruction Humbly.
  • I want to learn to handle Rejection and Failure.
  • I want to understand that I can only control myself.
