Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia & Lyla Valdovinos .
Hi Nadia & Lyla , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We moved from the twin cities to northern Minnesota and were inspired by all of the local farmers, homesteaders and small business owners. We took the plunge and got our first set of chickens – we were told chickens were like potato chips once you get one you can’t stop – our flock grew quickly and so has our business endeavors. We sell our farm fresh eggs, handmade natural body butter and punny cards with photos of our animals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been all smooth sailing. We had to do a lot of research to be sure our chickens were healthy and lay good eggs. Taking care of livestock is a lot of work and since expanding our brand we have participated in local markets. Markets can be a hit or miss and is not for the faint of heart when you invest everything you have into your own business especially when you’re 15 and 12 years old.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We “the Valdo Chicks” are known for our farm fresh eggs. We are so proud of ourselves for learning the ins and outs of being livestock care takers. Now since expanding our business we are becoming more known for our body butter and punny animal greeting card line and are super pumped that we have now shipped across the country – Utah, California, New Mexico and more.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
That’s when we started our business and everyone was enthusiastic about supporting local businesses so we actually had a great kick start.
