Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Werness.
Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My mom was in photography school when I was a baby. I grew up on the other side of the lens, being a little toddler muse for my mom with our backdrop in the basement! Once I hit middle school, I became obsessed with photography and would bring my little point-and-shoot camera everywhere. I took a few photography classes in high school and would have my friends model for me, but I never wanted to pursue it as a career. I was worried that having to make money from photography would take away its fun and artistry. I went to college for marketing and did that for a few years, but eventually, photography found me again. What began as a fun hobby on the side quickly grew. I found support in a business coach and took the leap of faith to be self-employed and grow my business! It was always a pipe dream of mine to become a wedding photographer, but I never thought I would be “good enough.” In November, I will celebrate 5 years of being my boss and growing my photography business, Bauer Creative! It’s been a fun ride with many ups and downs and constant growth.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As the uncertainty continued and months went by with reschedules after reschedules, it started to feel like weddings would never happen again! Just as my business was building momentum, the pandemic hit, and we weren’t even able to photograph outdoor sessions for fear of COVID-19. It was a very stressful time to be a small business owner & I did what I could to pivot and get through it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I photograph weddings, families, and newborns. My photography style is bright, colorful, and full of emotion and joy. I enjoy capturing those little “in-between” moments and giving my clients the gift of having photos that capture how their relationship feels.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Feeling content, having space to rest and pursue other interests besides paying the bills. Success to me is having a successful, fulfilling business while also making memories with friends & family. Someday I’d like to be able to travel more for sessions + weddings; life experiences are those things you can’t get back.
