Hi Post, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been writing lyrics since I was in elementary school. I played various instruments throughout middle school and high school, before eventually writing rhymes around 9th grade. Through the help of friends, family members and other local artists, I honed my craft and that’s what led to where I am today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of music is never a smooth road. Even today, it’s still a struggle. Music is incredibly underappreciated and people don’t understand how much time, effort and money it takes to create even a single song, let alone an entire album. While some tracks manage to get thousands of plays, others might not even crack 100. The most frustrating thing about music has been the lack of shows available. Before COVID, I could easily do a show whenever I wanted. At this point, most venues don’t want to book local hip-hop acts in the Twin Cities, so even finding a platform to perform music has been a real struggle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe words are the most important part of being a hip-hop artist, not beats, clothes or social network presence. A lot of rappers repeat the same topics and themes, but it’s important to go into each song or project with the understanding of what you’re trying to get across. Each album I’ve dropped has been sonically different and feels unique, but still authentically Post Mortem. I’ve dived into a wide range of topics such as mental health, death of family pets, friendships, love, partying and God. In a time where artists are artificially shortening their tracks or stacking large track lists, I’ve been a firm believer of creating exactly what I feel the need to say regardless of what trends are currently brewing.
Any big plans?
I’ve been contemplating how long I plan to remain in the rap game. With a lack of opportunities to perform, streaming not providing much of an income and the rise of AI, music is a scary business to be in. There is nothing imminent, but I have my sights set on either a comedy EP or perhaps my final LP.
