Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Strelow.
Hi Serena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Oh, what a journey it’s been! I’ll start by saying that photography has always been near and dear to my heart. I had my first camera when I was about 15 years old & it was (of course) pink. I took it everywhere: slumber parties, family get-togethers, holidays, you name it! I had my little point-and-shoot camera. I took it on walks, on car rides, and even explored my room by snapping photos of my artwork on the walls & raindrops on my window. Fast forward to my college years, where I studied art. I took drawing classes, digital communications, etc. However, after a few years, I wanted to help people somehow, in shape or form. So, I switched my major to Human Development and Family Studies. Here is where I learned we weren’t put on this Earth to live, pay bills, and “stay in our lane.” No, we are here to support each other and love ourselves the way we love others. I started to tap into this mindset as I got deeper into my professional years. I am now a boudoir photographer. With this, I do my best to support the women around me and act as their cheerleader. I remind them that every fine line tells about the laughter we’ve shared and that every stretch mark reminds us of how amazing our bodies are to grow as we need it, whether to bear children or to bear our bones. Our bodies are a work of art & we should display them proudly. As hard as it may be sometimes, that’s where Serena Marie Photography comes in.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, but with every golden opportunity comes hardship. Boudoir photography has many. I am a very Christian woman. Naturally, I’ve had some pushback with this sort of work. “It’s gross. It’s scandalous. How can you call yourself a Christian and shoot boudoir photos?” These are just a few phrases I’ve heard in my boudoir experience. My answer to all this is that I look at it as women’s ministry. In a world where it’s become normal to receive Botox to change our face, shoot up lip filler, and purchase all sorts of shapewear. I’m here to expand on my lady’s self-certainty that they are beautiful just the way they are; God does not make mistakes. I do want to say, all though there is nothing wrong with using tools to grow your confidence, my brand speaks explicitly to those having difficulty finding peace in their very standard and beautiful bodies.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I want to think what sets me apart from other photographers is that I shoot boudoir photography, while still being strong in my faith. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come in this experience, and I’m also so proud of all the clients who have taken the leap with me. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I am enjoying the journey until I get there! With that, I also photograph weddings, engagements, couples, maternity, and special events! These genres are actually where I started my professional photography career. But, I’m more widely known for my work in the boudoir world.
