Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Johnson.
Hi Taylor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photos have always been something I’ve held close to my heart. I was always the kid taking photos of random things trying my hardest to make it look artsy. I don’t think I ever went on a field trip without a trusty Kodak film disposable camera in my backpack. I remember thinking as a kid that being a photographer would be so much fun, but my lack of confidence at the time made me put that dream on the back burner until something switched during the summer of 2020. That summer, my boyfriend and I road tripped to Colorado. I remember telling him multiple times that I wished I had a nice camera to capture the beautiful views because my iPhone was not cutting it. Over the next few months, I researched cameras anytime I had my phone in my hand. I was determined to find the perfect camera and become an amazing photographer. In the fall of 2020, I finally purchased my first camera. I was so excited and terrified at the same time. I was following my dreams, but I also invested a lot of money into something that didn’t guarantee to work out. I was determined to learn everything I needed to become a successful photographer. With the help of thousands of Youtube videos and online courses, I learned everything I needed to know about my camera. I quickly caught on to the many aspects of photography, and I’ve continued to grow my skills. In the spring of 2021, I started officially booking clients; each month, my business has grown. I’m so incredibly happy I leaped to follow my dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest struggle along the way has always been believing in myself and my work. Like anything, being a photographer has its struggles. There are millions of photographers worldwide, so it’s hard not to get caught up in comparing your work to others. I recently talked about this with my friend Michael, who gave some great advice that has really changed my outlook on this issue. He said, “if you think your work is amazing, then your work is amazing. It doesn’t matter what other people think about it”. That’s something I will never forget, and it has changed my perspective. I hope that advice can help someone out as well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For as long as I can remember, I have always been creative, and photography allows my creativity to run wild. I’ve been specializing in creative portraits of seniors, couples, and weddings. I would describe my work to be clean with rich colors and emotion. I believe my ability to create a positive and fun environment and my power to make people feel beautiful set me apart.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Overall I had a great childhood. I grew up on a dairy farm in the middle of Wisconsin. Growing up in the country is incredible, so trying to pick one favorite childhood memory is nearly impossible. From zooming around on our mini ATV, all the walks to the nearby river, running around the farm with walkie-talkies acting like stealthy spies, to the music videos I would make with my younger brother. I couldn’t ever pick just one to be my favorite.
