Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffiny Mahrer.
Hi Tiffiny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Tattooing is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was 13 years old. I had someone I considered a positive figure and influence in my life who passed away shortly before I turned 13, and I decided then to become a tattoo artist to let his memory live on, and to also advance my art and skills. I’ve been drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil and have never doubted my passion for it, it’s the only thing I want to do in life. I came across an opportunity in my early 20’s when my parent’s friends noticed my high school art hanging in my parent’s living room and suggested a tattoo shop that had an opening for an apprenticeship. I called the shop right then and there and set up a meeting for the next day, and I managed to impress the owner enough to begin my journey into the tattoo industry. It was a difficult and intense learning curve from paper to skin, and more challenging than anything I’ve done in my life, but it was the most rewarding. I succeeded in my apprenticeship to earn my full license and have been tattooing now for a little over 5 years. I wouldn’t change my career for anything and strive to better my skill and knowledge every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely there were struggles. Apprenticeships don’t pay in the beginning and figuring out how to pursue my dream while sustaining myself was difficult. Another struggle is learning how to overcome the anxiety of permanently altering someone’s body, tattoo needles don’t have erasers and understanding skin and how ink goes in is immensely technical. I’ve struggled with confidence in my art a lot in life and that’s something you absolutely need in this industry. Finding my fight and desire to be the best I can was a blunt but victorious battle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a tattoo artist and I create custom permanent art for the skin. Tattooing is using a needle machine to place ink into the second layer of the skin known as the dermis. I try to expand my art style as much as I can but currently am specializing in, and am known for my cartoon/game/anime style designs. I love doing pieces with crisp lines and bold color, but also enjoy dense black and grey pieces and stipple shading. I’m most proud of being able to help someone create a wonderful personal design that I can give them for life, it’s an amazing feeling seeing someone light up with love for the art they have, and for them to put their trust in me. I believe what sets me apart from others is my passion and drive to succeed and constantly learn. Art has saved me more times than I can count, and I can’t imagine doing anything else in life.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity and hard-working population, I don’t enjoy the struggle and hardship the city can bring.
