Today we’d like to introduce you to Trisha Miller.
Trisha , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up I loved to dance and always had my nails done. My mom and grandma were cosmetologists, and my favorite cousin is a nail technician with her own salon so definitely inspired by them.
After high school, I landed a general manager position at a tanning salon and was there for 10 years, which helped me learn a lot about business. The opportunity came for me to go back to school for nails. As I built my nail business up, I discovered Pilates which helped manage my chronic pain and I had to become an instructor to help others with Pilates and what it could do for their bodies. As I grew in my Pilates business, I discovered other fitness modalities and fell in love with them all, so 0f course I had to become an instructor of them all and share in the fun you can have with fitness. I started teaching private training out of my house and teaching fitness classes through community education which led me to renting different locations. I merged with my current location in 2016 and as added space in the building became available, I kept growing in health and wellness. We currently have a salt booth, infra-red and near infra-red-light therapy, infra-red sauna, and compression sleeves to help manage pain and other ailments. All these services we do have helped me in so many ways with so many things which inspires me to offer them to help others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not a smooth road at all….lol.
Building a clientele is hard especially in a small town. Getting your name out there but also your purpose and brand. The economy is always up and down which is hard as prices for back bar supplies and tools rise. My business is an independent contractor business, so my staff are their own entities. A lot of staff comes and goes as they build their own business and outgrow your location, so I have had very low staff at times. Then add a family to the mix and juggling it all. The back office of a business is challenging. A lot of hours after hours learning new routines, techniques, paperwork, bills etc….
The new trends that come and go is very interesting to watch especially if the trend is something you are so passionate about, but the competition is not. The wear and tear of equipment. Covid was a real struggle and coming out of covid has been hard. You deal with a lot of different people with different energies. Then Minnesota laws and rules seem to always change.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My business is a Health, Wellness, Fitness, Salon and Spa studio. We have a salon where the stylists perform hair, nails, skin care, ear candling, spray tanning, eyelash extension services. Our health and wellness studio has a salt booth, infra-red-light therapy, infra-red sauna, UV light tanning bed, spray tanning and compression sleeves. Our fitness studio is a small group private training studio. Our main studio holds 6-10 students depending on the modality and our Pilates Reformer studio holds 4 students which helps to make the classes customized to the students and what they need verses a class of 15+ students. I can give special attention to all students to help them achieve their goals and actually see a difference in their bodies as well their mind. We also have a dairy farm. I currently run the bookkeeping, scheduling, main management, teach the majority of classes and have some nail clients in the mix.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
ABSOLUTELY! So many people in my life have been HUGE mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates etc to me. Even the ones who have come and gone, they all have taught me a lot. My mother, grandmother, and cousin who are or were in the salon industry huge mentors who inspired me to pursue to work in the industry. I learned a lot from my years in the tanning industry. ALL of my clients and students, especially the ones who are still with me from day 1 and still going strong with me.
My husband and my kids. Oh so so so many people. My current staff and students are truly the best and I am so blessed to have them. We have so much fun and cheer each other on. They all motivate me to keep going
The people who have come and gone in my career and life in general played the role by teaching me who and what I want to work with. My clients and students play the role by showing up and keep coming back. They also help by sharing their experience with others.
