Today we’d like to introduce you to Anton Dabbs.
Hi Anton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi Anton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been grappling with anxiety since childhood, which initially led me to seek relief through alcohol. Unfortunately, drinking often resulted in poor decisions, landing me on the wrong side of the law. By my late twenties, I started addressing my anxiety and reducing my alcohol consumption. Up until then, I had been working as an automotive mechanic. At 30, I got married and soon welcomed a daughter. Around this time, my life improved significantly, and I launched Lemon Squad, specializing in automotive inspections. The business grew from a one-person operation to employing 8,000 staff and inspectors. I ran Lemon Squad from my early thirties until 2019, when I sold it to Wrench Inc., though I continued as a consultant until January 1, 2024. Concurrently with my departure from Lemon Squad, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This diagnosis has been enlightening, helping me understand myself better and manage my behaviors. I am now receiving medication for my anxiety and some symptoms of autism, and I feel that life is in a wonderful place for me these days. I just finished writing a book titled “From Turmoil to Triumph,” I’m now laying the groundwork for re-entering the automotive inspection industry with a new company.
Living with autism and anxiety presents significant challenges for me daily, especially while being an entrepreneur.
Thanks for sharing that. You could tell us more about your business.
Starting a company without a formal degree or education was challenging but natural. I never anticipated becoming so successful in business. Over the years, I’ve observed many others launch their ventures only to see them fail and shut down.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Duluth because it offers so many outdoor activities. I’m a fan of Lake Superior and enjoy hiking and camping here. We also have some great restaurants. Despite its size, it retains a small-town feel. There’s not much I don’t appreciate about our beautiful city, though I do wish we could do more to help the homeless population.
