Exploring Life & Business with Ashton Rautmann and Quinn Mazur of For Knit Me Knot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashton Ruatmann and Quinn Mazur. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Panda Sweater Vests. Yup – We started our business making tiny sweater vests for a stuffed panda. Ashton Rautmann and Quinn Mazur met in college and were fast friends. They bonded over their shared love of travel and passion for good food. After graduating, they were roommates in Nordest Minneapolis. Their first year living together was a brutal winter and since they didn’t have cable and it was too cold to go anywhere, they spent a lot of time cozied up on their second-hand couch, drinking strong coffee and knitting sweaters, hats, mittens, and scarves. Over time, they learned that there were only so many sweaters that one could make before craving something new. As the snow continued to fall, their skills with their needles and yarn grew, and they decided to create an online shop to sell their handmade winter wear. When spring finally came, the shop sat largely neglected — a pattern which continued for a few years. Then, one day, an order request was submitted for 30 tiny, custom sweater vests for a stuffed panda teddy bear — and they needed the order within two weeks! The knitting frenzy began! Ashton and Quinn spent every waking moment — on breaks at work, while waiting for dinner to cook, even while sitting in traffic on the morning commute, knitting mini sweater vests! It was an exhilarating challenge that planted the seed for For Knit Me Knot. After delivering the vests, which would be part of a product launch party giveaway, they decided to invest in some yarn to make hats, mittens, and scarves to sell for the Holiday season. Since then, For Knit Me Knot has grown into a handmade market staple, bringing the softest, most cozy handknits to Minnesotans and visitors alike!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As best freinds, Ashton and Quinn aim to have nothing but fun while running For Knit Me Knot. We have been lucky enough to be able to grow the business together in an organic way that has been so enjoyable. Our handknits are amazingly soft, making them the most attractive to our customers when they can be touched. COVID presented a challenge as eCommerce rose and the tactile experience of shopping was made more difficult, but generally, our road has been smooth and filled with laughs and pure appreciation for owning a business as best friends.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
For Knit Me Knot provides cozy, handknit winterwear that is at once soft and luxurious while also warm enough to withstand the harsh Minnesota winter. We have a few core beliefs that serve as a northern start when selecting our materials, designing our products, growing our team and building our retail partnerships:

Every knit holds a story.

When every piece is created by hand, you can’t help but put your heart and soul into each one. The love we feel, the adventure of the movie we’re watching, or the serenity of the scene we’re looking at is infused into every piece.

Materials matter.

We didn’t take the task of selecting the perfect fiber lightly. It had to be durable and warm, but it had to feel amazing on your skin. We settled on a luxurious blend of highland wool and alpaca that provides superior warmth and softness.

Crafted for quality.
We’ve obsessed over our techniques and patterns to ensure the result is just right. A perfect cuff, a cozy fit, and a mitten that feels just right.

When at Handcraft markets, we’re known for producing product while selling at our booth — if you ever see our shop out in public, the staff members will be knitting away while talking to you about the product – we truly enjoy handcrafting our product while on the job AND while relaxing at home.

We’re most proud of product that matches our values and personality — we provide luxurious and soft handknit that is practical and beautiful.

We want readers to know that every purchase you make from a small business has a story. Each piece we produce means something to us, and was lovely crafted by our hands out of a string of yarn. Every time a piece finds a home, we do a little happy dance because of the excitement and thrill of seeing someone love what we made!
