Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Bogdan.
Hi Dawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We moved to the little town of Cook, Minnesota from a large western suburbs of Chicago in 2005. I owned & operated an Allstate Insurance Agency, which I sold, My husband, Chris, worked as a auto body shop & paint shop manager for many years. We loved Lake Vermilion as we had spent many vacations at Vermilion Dam Lodge and decided to sell everything and move to Cook with our only child who was just turning 2 yrs. old. We both worked for a well known Marina on the lake and also for their sales & service location in Cook for a collective 13 years before we decided to move on as we had been looking for our own business opportunity for awhile. In May 2022 we purchased the Furniture Plus Gift & Furniture Store which has been a staple in Cook for over 45 years. We changed the name to Northern Comfort Company and continue to sell furniture, gifts and apparel as they did. The store is very vast at 10,000 sq. feet and we offer some very unique gift items and primarily furniture made in the U.S.!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are loving the business and all the relationships we’ve made from vendors to customers. Winter business is a challenge but the locals are good to us with mattress and furniture sales as well as Christmas shopping.
We’ve been impressed with Northern Comfort Company, LLC., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a 10,000 sq. foot store with 3 levels full of home & outdoor furniture, mattresses, apparel, unique gifts and home décor. We have a large area devoted to puzzles, games and children’s toys and books. Chris and I are known for our personalized customer service which “big box” stores lack these days. Anytime we know you are purchasing a gift, we will get it ready for gift giving with a gift bag & tissue as well! We are proud that most of all of the furniture we sell is made right here in the U.S. and we offer beautiful Amish made pieces as well from Indiana, Ohio and Minnesota. Customers love buying American made and custom furniture orders typically only take 4-6 weeks to come in before we deliver to your home!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
We love the relationships we are making with customers & visitors to the store alike. Tourists to Lake Vermilion and the surrounding areas come back year after year just to see what we’ve added to our fun inventory and catch up with us on what’s happened since their last visit!
