Exploring Life & Business with Dena Wilkins of Aesthetics Evolution LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dena Wilkins.

Dena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in beauty at 18 years old as a Prestige Beauty Advisor at Ulta Beauty. Looking back, that role gave me the foundation for everything I do today. I quickly fell in love with connecting with clients, asking thoughtful questions, understanding their needs, and using education to help them feel more confident. Even before that, I was the theater kid who loved makeup, artistry, and transformation, so beauty always felt like a natural place for me to land.

While working at Ulta, I met an esthetician who inspired me to explore esthetics more seriously. I enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis and graduated as an esthetician in August of 2015. I still remember telling one of my instructors, “I want to be an instructor one day, and I want to be at the top of my class.” I have always been ambitious, but more than that, I have always felt deeply called to learn, teach, and help others grow.

After graduating, I began my esthetics career at The Woodhouse Day Spa in Maple Grove, Minnesota, which was their first Minnesota location at the time. That experience gave me a strong foundation in hospitality, luxury spa standards, client care, and hands-on treatment room experience. From there, I continued expanding my education and became a certified laser technician and a licensed esthetics instructor while also working in medical spa and dermatology settings.

Throughout my career, I have always found myself living in two worlds at once: the treatment room and the classroom. I loved working directly with clients, but I was equally passionate about creating training content, developing protocols, and helping other providers feel more confident in their craft. Whether I was working in a school, spa, medical setting, or alongside a brand, education was always the thread that connected everything.

In 2021, I joined Sanitas Skincare as an Education Manager, and that role was a major turning point for me. It was there that I truly fell in love with the world of professional skincare manufacturing and B2B education. I had the opportunity to learn how products were sourced and developed, collaborate around educational strategy, create training assets for spa and skincare partners, and then bring that education to life in front of providers. Seeing the full journey from formulation to education to real treatment room application was incredibly fulfilling.

I later represented AlumierMD as a Brand Educator, and although that chapter ended unexpectedly when I was laid off in December of 2024, it also pushed me into a season of reflection. I had become a mother earlier that year, and for the first time, I had to really think about what I wanted my career to look like moving forward — not just what I was capable of doing, but what kind of impact I wanted to make.

After taking a few months to reset, I returned to The Woodhouse Day Spa in Minnesota, which had grown from one location to three. I stepped into a Director of Esthetics and Development role, where I supported training, protocol development, provider growth, service consistency, and elevated education across the spa teams. That experience confirmed what I already knew: my passion lives at the intersection of esthetics, education, service experience, and business development.

Eventually, all of those experiences led me to create Aesthetics Evolution. My business was born from the belief that estheticians, spa teams, and beauty brands deserve education that is practical, elevated, and deeply connected to real-life application. Through Aesthetics Evolution, I support brands, spas, and service providers with training strategy, protocol development, curriculum, content, and education systems that help teams feel more confident, aligned, and empowered.

My path has not been perfectly linear, but every chapter has built on the last. From the sales floor to the treatment room, from the classroom to brand education, and now into entrepreneurship, my mission has remained the same: to elevate the esthetics industry through education, intention, and meaningful connection.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road, but every difficult season has helped shape the direction I am in now.

For much of my career, I was someone who attached a lot of my identity to being driven, capable, and constantly moving forward. I started young, I worked hard, I continued my education, I said yes to opportunities, and I always tried to be the person who could figure it out. That ambition has served me well, but it has also made some of the harder seasons feel even more personal.

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating unexpected career transitions. I have experienced roles ending before I was ready, opportunities shifting, and moments where I had to sit with the uncomfortable question of, “What now?” Being laid off in December of 2024, shortly after becoming a mother, was especially difficult. I was in a season of life that already felt completely new, and then my professional identity changed at the same time. It was humbling, emotional, and honestly very disorienting.

Motherhood changed me in ways I could not have fully understood until I was in it. It made me more intentional, more grounded, and more aware of the kind of life I wanted to build — not just the kind of career I wanted to chase. I still had big dreams and deep ambition, but I started to look at success differently. I wanted work that allowed me to make an impact, use my creativity, support others, and still stay connected to my family and personal life.

Another major challenge has been learning to trust my own voice. For years, I was often the person behind the scenes creating education, building protocols, developing training systems, and helping other providers or teams grow. I knew I was good at the work, but stepping out from behind a company, brand, or title and building something of my own required a different level of confidence. Starting Aesthetics Evolution meant I had to stop waiting for someone else to validate my expertise and begin owning it for myself.

There have been seasons where I felt unsure, discouraged, or unclear on the next step. But those seasons forced me to get honest about what I actually wanted to contribute to the industry. I realized that my passion has never been limited to one treatment room, one brand, or one role. My passion is education. It is helping estheticians, spa teams, and beauty professionals feel more confident, more supported, and more equipped to succeed.

So no, it has not been smooth. But every challenge has sharpened my purpose. The setbacks pushed me to build something more aligned. Aesthetics Evolution was born from that place — from experience, resilience, motherhood, reinvention, and the belief that education can truly elevate both people and businesses in the esthetics industry.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Aesthetics Evolution LLC?
Aesthetics Evolution LLC is an education and consulting business created to support estheticians, spa teams, skincare brands, and wellness businesses through elevated, practical, and real-world education.

At its core, Aesthetics Evolution exists to bridge the gap between knowledge and confident application. In the esthetics industry, there is so much more to success than simply knowing a product or performing a treatment. Providers need to understand how to consult with intention, create memorable guest experiences, communicate value, recommend home care, follow thoughtful protocols, and continue growing in both technical skill and confidence. That is where my work comes in.

Through Aesthetics Evolution, I offer training strategy, protocol development, curriculum design, treatment education, brand education support, content creation, and consulting for spas, brands, and service providers. My work is rooted in helping teams feel more prepared, more aligned, and more confident in how they serve their clients.

What sets Aesthetics Evolution apart is that it is built from real industry experience. I have worked in the treatment room, in luxury spa environments, in medical spa and dermatology settings, in education, in brand training, and in business development. Because of that, I understand the needs of both the provider and the business. I know what it feels like to be hands-on with clients, but I also understand the importance of consistency, retention, retail confidence, service standards, and long-term growth.

I am especially proud of the way Aesthetics Evolution allows me to combine creativity, education, strategy, and heart. My goal is never to create training that feels overwhelming or disconnected from real life. I want education to feel approachable, useful, and empowering. Whether I am developing a treatment protocol, creating educational content for a skincare brand, or supporting a spa team with service experience and provider development, my focus is always on creating tools that people can actually use.

Aesthetics Evolution is ultimately about helping the esthetics industry evolve through better education, stronger support systems, and more intentional client experiences. I want readers to know that my brand was built from a genuine love for this industry and a deep belief that when providers feel confident and supported, both clients and businesses benefit.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to stay curious and do not rush the process of becoming great.

When I was younger, I wanted to achieve everything quickly. I was ambitious, eager, and always thinking about the next step. While that drive helped me grow, I have also learned that some of the most valuable parts of this industry come from experience, repetition, and truly learning how to serve people well. Confidence is built over time. Skill is built over time. Trust is built over time.

I would tell new estheticians and beauty professionals to invest deeply in their education, but also pay attention to the client experience. In this industry, it is not only about what you know or what treatment you perform. It is about how you make people feel. Clients remember when they feel heard, cared for, respected, and safe. They remember the small details, the thoughtful consultation, the way you explain something, and the way you personalize their experience.

I also wish I understood earlier how important the business side of the industry is. Technical skill matters, but so do communication, retail confidence, rebooking, client retention, professionalism, and understanding how your work contributes to the bigger picture. The providers who grow the most are often the ones who are willing to keep learning beyond the treatment room.

Another piece of advice I would give is to be open to where your path may lead. I started in makeup and beauty retail, moved into esthetics, worked in spas, medical settings, education, brand training, and eventually entrepreneurship. At the time, not every step made perfect sense, but looking back, each chapter gave me something I needed.

Most importantly, I would tell someone starting out not to underestimate their own voice. Learn from everyone you can, but do not lose the parts of you that make your approach unique. The industry needs passionate providers, thoughtful educators, creative thinkers, and people who care deeply about raising the standard. Stay humble, stay teachable, and keep going. Your path may evolve in ways you cannot see yet, but that evolution can become the most beautiful part of your career.
