Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Gudde Xiong of Acupuncture & Tea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Gudde Xiong.

Hi Dr. Gudde, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
July 1st, 2025 marked 2 years in business for Acupuncture & Tea. My love for my career actually started from fear of this medicine as a child. I am the fourth generation Chinese medicine doctor in the family, and therefore I had to grow up with it. Whenever I was sick or not feeling well, the go to at home was bitter medicine or acupuncture needles – a child’s worst nightmare. Growing up, I got to see amazing things my mom was able to do with her patients.

By high school, I considered going the same route as my mom, grandmother, and great grandfather, but found out that I needed pre-requisites to enter any college acupuncture program. Thus, I detoured and decided to go into chemical engineering as an alternative. My second year in college, I was a junior standing student, almost done with my undergraduate degree, but acupuncture and Chinese medicine popped up in my mind again. By the grace of God, doors opened and everything fell into place so easily. I applied to Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota for the Masters in Acupuncture and got accepted, was given a huge scholarship, and living arrangements were made. They all fell into place so quickly and easily, all I could do was praise God and thank Him for this opportunity.

After completing my Masters in Acupuncture and Doctorate in Chinese Medicine and working late night clinic shifts, I finally decided to open my own private practice: Acupuncture & Tea. Although it is a humble space located inside Hmong Village, I love what I am able to offer to my patients that I may not be able to offer in other work settings.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles along the way
1. Realizing I couldn’t get into acupuncture programs directly after college, thus I took a detour a pursued chemical engineering

2. Actually opening my business
– never felt ready or wanted everything to be perfect before grand opening
– learned that it will never be perfect, the business will continue to grow and you will add and remove things along the way

3. Speaking Hmong
– grew up understanding Hmong, but rarely spoke Hmong
– while at Northwestern Health Sciences University, I became the president of Hmong Language Club and challenged myself to learn and speak Hmong healthcare vocabulary

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
