Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Dicks.
Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We like to think of Style Society as three businesses in one, run by three friends that each manage our own category while supporting each other. We share a drive for success, a love for creativity, and an obsession with thrifting! Style Society really began when Ashley and I (Emily) started a small side hustle of doing wedding floral. We met Jess working at a Vintage home goods store. Jess is a talented & handy lady with a degree in interior design and together, she and I (Emily) started the rental business, Style Society! We found a fun space in NE Minneapolis to house our inventory (the clubhouse) and got to work collecting and we found we had a real knack for collecting great vintage pieces! When the pandemic began, we really had to look at our business and figure out how to pivot! We focused on small backyard weddings and had pop up sales selling old inventory and items we thrifted! The pop up sales were a hit! At this same time, the floral side hustle that Ashley and I (Emily) had started was also building real momentum; and in 2021 we decided to merge the floral business with the rental business and throw a vintage home décor shop in the mix at the same time! We opened our shop in St Paul last May and it has been an absolute dream!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course it hasn’t been a smooth road to this point, running a business is hard in general, not to even mention the pandemic! We have had a lot of hard lessons to learn as we have grown and changed over the last few years, but it’s all about perspective. We look at everything as figureoutable, there is nothing that we as a team cannot do/make/fix! I think the biggest thing we have been focusing on lately is perfecting our customer experience, learning how to best work together as a team of three strong women, and figuring out how to be the best leaders we can be as we bring team members on.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Style Society is a women owned small business specializing in event rentals & floral and we have a vintage & home décor shop! Our rentals are thoughtfully sourced vintage and modern for your wedding, event, and creative exploration. We offer beautiful, intentionally arranged florals for your wedding, home, and personal enjoyment. Our shop is full of curated vintage décor, locally made goods, and badass plants & blooms! I am most proud of the fact that we have created a brand that we are so proud of. It really represents the three of us – our style, our vision, and our personality! We are genuinely doing what we love and pursuing our wildest dreams and I think you can see and feel that through our website, our social media, and our physical spaces! We love working with all styles, all color palettes, and we love love love when someone has a vision and we get to help them bring that to life! We offer full service floral and rentals for all weddings and events & our shop location is open Wednesday – Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-4!
What were you like growing up?
I (Emily) always like to say that antiques run in my blood! My Great Grandma, Grandma, and Mom all owned antique shops growing up! I have always been around them, estate sales, flea markets – you name it! I then started working at a flower shop when I was 16 and fell in love with flowers and weddings! I met Ashley in college where she went to school for business. A few years later we decided to start the little side hustle of doing wedding floral and that quickly grew into a full blown business! Jess went to school for interior design and has always had a love for thrifting. She owned a small vintage shop for a time in Menomonie and then moved on to refinish and reimagine vintage and antique furniture for a store in Hastings! That’s where we all met and bonded over our love of vintage, the thrill of the hunt, and the satisfaction of getting to be creative!
