Exploring Life & Business with Erica Martin of Martin Media Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Martin.

Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a small-town girl with big dreams. I grew up in a town of fewer than 1,000 people, but even as a kid, I knew I wanted to live in the city and work in marketing. After college, I took a few marketing jobs, but my dream was always to work at Target Corporate. It didn’t happen overnight. I interviewed more than once, faced rejection along the way, and kept trying until I finally landed a position on Target’s in-store marketing team. I loved helping bring campaigns to life by creating the signs and displays you see hanging from the ceilings and throughout the stores. My husband and I spent 12 years in the Twin Cities, and I spent 10 incredible years learning how one of the world’s most recognized brands approaches marketing, strategy, and the customer experience. After we had our two boys, we realized we wanted a different pace of life and the opportunity to raise them in a smaller community, so we moved to Perham, Minnesota. That’s when I took the leap, left corporate, and started Martin Media Co. Today, I get to help some of the biggest names in the health and wellness industry grow their brands while working from my home overlooking the lake. I truly feel like I’ve found the best of both worlds. I bring big-brand marketing strategy to businesses that want to make a real impact while enjoying the slower, family-centered life we always hoped for.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Like most entrepreneurs, there have been a lot of ups and downs along the way. Leaving a stable corporate career to start my own business was exciting, but it was also one of the biggest leaps of faith I’ve ever taken. Suddenly, I wasn’t just the marketer. I was the salesperson, accountant, customer service rep, project manager, and CEO all at once. There were seasons of wondering where the next client would come from, learning how to price my services, building a team, making hiring mistakes, and figuring out how to grow a business while raising two boys. Every challenge taught me something, and looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. Those experiences helped shape how I work with clients today. I understand what it’s like to wear all the hats, feel overwhelmed, and try to figure out marketing on your own. That’s exactly why I’m so passionate about helping other business owners simplify their marketing, stay consistent, and build a business they truly enjoy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Martin Media Co. was built on a simple belief: marketing shouldn’t feel overwhelming. After spending 10 years in corporate marketing at Target, I started my agency to help businesses create marketing that is strategic, consistent, and actually gets results. Today, my team and I have the privilege of working with some of the biggest names in the health and wellness industry, helping them grow through social media, content marketing, branding, AI, and digital strategy.

Over the years, I’ve realized that most business owners don’t struggle because they aren’t smart enough or creative enough. They struggle because they’re trying to do everything on their own. That’s why I’ve expanded beyond agency services to focus on education, coaching, and community through The Growth Lab. My passion is helping women entrepreneurs simplify their marketing, use AI to work smarter, and build systems they can actually stick with.

What sets us apart is the combination of big-brand marketing strategy and real-world small business experience. I’ve sat in boardrooms at one of the country’s largest retailers, but I’ve also built a business from the ground up. I understand both worlds, and I love helping entrepreneurs apply proven marketing principles in a way that’s practical, sustainable, and achievable.

More than anything, I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built. Marketing isn’t just about creating content or getting more followers. It’s about helping business owners grow with confidence, stay consistent, and build businesses that support the life they want to live. If our clients feel less overwhelmed and more excited about their marketing than they did when we first met, then we’ve done our job.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe the marketing industry is going to change more in the next five years than it has in the last twenty. Artificial intelligence is already transforming how businesses create content, serve customers, analyze data, and operate more efficiently. The businesses that embrace AI as a tool, rather than fear it, are going to have a significant advantage.

At the same time, I think authenticity and community are going to become even more valuable. As AI-generated content becomes easier to create, people will crave genuine relationships, real stories, and brands they can trust. The businesses that win won’t necessarily be the ones creating the most content. They’ll be the ones creating the most meaningful connections.

I also believe we’re moving away from marketing that focuses on chasing algorithms and viral moments. Instead, successful businesses will build simple, repeatable marketing systems that consistently attract and nurture the right audience over time.

That’s why I’m so passionate about teaching business owners not just how to use AI, but how to combine it with strategy, authenticity, and consistency. AI is an incredible tool, but it will never replace human connection. The future belongs to businesses that know how to leverage technology while continuing to build trust, serve their communities, and create real relationships with their customers.
