Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe Johnson
Hi Gabe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in south Minneapolis and in the suburbs. Growing up I always wanted to be a NFL player but injuries unfortunately derailed that path. I decided that I wanted to still be a part of the sports world so I decided to major in statistics. Not many schools over statistics as a major, so after getting accepted to multiple schools I settled down and chose Mankato! At about the middle of my educational journey, I was hired at All Star Nutrition as an associate and fell in love with the job and the culture immediately. In the summer of 2024, going into my last semester of school in the fall, I was promoted to GM of the store and have held that position ever since!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are struggles with everyone and everyone has many of their own battles they fight along the way. When I was younger I didn’t hang around the best crowd and got into more trouble then I should have. Once I realized I was half-way decent at football, I was able to distance myself from them. But then injuries to my head and back made it so I couldn’t really progress as much as I wanted to in the sport. I graduated high school and came into college during the COVID-19 pandemic which made me very unhealthy. I was smoking heavy, eating horrible, stayed home away from others, and really just minded my own business in my own area of self pity. Then I decided to do something about it. I started going back to the gym and putting healthy food in my body. I stopped smoking and was really able to take off. In regards to the store, it was a safe-haven for me. I was a customer before I was the GM and received so much help along my fitness journey, it made me want to do the same for everyone. I want to have an impact on lives and help people reach goals they feel are impossible regardless of what they are. Could I go find a job in statistics? Absolutely. However, I feel that my passion and my drive is keeping me in the store to make as much of a difference in the world as I can!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
All Star Nutrition is a small business that is privately owned. I took over the store after a year of being an associate and am hoping to own my own store with my boss one day! Myself and my staff specialize in nutritional guidance, workout tips, and supplementation. We do a lot that separates us from our competitors. Perhaps the biggest perk we offer is our FREE use of our In-Body machine, which is a $13,000 machine that shows muscle mass, body fat percentage, water weight, calories burned at rest, and so much more. Using these numbers, we are able to give customers accurate macronutrient breakdowns, caloric intake, and even a full fledge, in-depth meal plan. All Star does not have its own personal brand either. Everything we carry in store is from another party, and is all 3rd party tested! Meaning, what you see on a product label in store is what is in the product. There is no way for companies to put something in there or not have something in there that we wouldn’t know about. I am definitely most proud of how involved within the community we are. We run two free challenges during the year along with our Sweat For Vets event in September where we donate to charity, involve other small business, and individual owners. It really is an amazing culture meant for all people of all different backgrounds. Just like at Hogwarts, help is given to those at All Star Nutrition who ask for it!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The only negative thing I can say about Mankato is that I need more places to have fun at! I love the diversity of the city and how many small businesses support each other here. Being that Mankato is a college town, you meet new people every single year and you just hope that the connections you make here last a lifetime. Mankato has presented me with countless opportunities to go after and I am grateful to the city in that aspect. It is my second home.
