Hi Hewan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all began when my hair was long in fifth grade, reaching from my shoulders to the center of my spine. It was in excellent health and had been carefully cared for. When I started working as a swim instructor at the YMCA, I began to neglect it and only wash it twice a week, and it became too much for me to handle. Despite the fact that my hair was naturally curly, I began straightening it. I was breaking my curl pattern by doing so. When I was in a PSEO cosmetology class, my classmates began to work on each other’s hair, and my hair was washed every other day, which severely damaged it. My hair began to fall out over time. Because of the products I was using, my hair began to shed and get dry over time, and continually washing my hair stripped natural oils from my scalp. My senior year, I opted to enroll in the Mower County CEO program, which teaches you how to start a small business. I decided to create an organic hair product collection with each product selected for certain hair types and solely certified organic components. HD|DH Hair and Skin is the brand name of the product. My company is actually a two-in-one operation. My hair products are made by me, and my business partner makes organic skin products. Denni Heimer, my business partner, is represented by the DH of HD|DH. A pendulum is the name of our company.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were a lot of struggles of coming up with a formula that was all organic. You never really realize how hard it is to make hair and skin products until you do. One of the biggest struggles was trying to find the right ingredients for the right texture of hair. Each hair type has different needs and trying to balance which ingredient is better for this type of hair was challenging. A lot of trials and errors.

HD|DH Hair by Hewan Dagmawi actively strives to create hair care products for hair types often left out of generic companies. What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say building a connection with your clients and being honest with them. you always wanna build lifelong clients then just a one time customer. Making connections with your clients is really important because that’s one thing big companies don’t do. You want to make sure you give the best experience and make people feel like they’re cared for.
